Who Were Alcock and Brown?

How Did Brown Save the Engines?
Ice began forming on the carburetor air intakes of both Rolls-Royce Eagle engines. Structural ice building up in the intake passages chokes airflow progressively, starving the engine of what it needs to make power. With both engines icing over the North Atlantic in the dark, the situation was serious.
Brown climbed out of the cockpit.
In flight. In the dark. Over the open Atlantic. He worked his way out of his seat and crawled onto the lower wing of the Vimy with a penknife. He reached each engine nacelle and chipped the ice from the intake passages. Then he climbed back in. When the ice returned, he went out again.

How Did the Flight End?
By the morning of June 15, 1919, both men had been awake for the better part of a day. They had survived an uncontrolled spiral toward the ocean, lost their radio and airspeed indicator in the first hours, and dealt with repeated engine icing that required one of them to physically exit the aircraft six times.
Brown picked up the radio beacon from the wireless station at Clifden, County Galway on the western coast of Ireland. Alcock began looking for somewhere to land.
They spotted what appeared to be a smooth green field near Clifden and made for it. It was a bog. The Vimy’s wheels sank on contact, the nose pitched forward into the soft ground, and the aircraft came to rest with its tail pointing at the sky and its propellers buried in the turf. Neither man was seriously hurt.
They had flown 1,890 miles, averaging approximately 115 miles per hour, burning virtually all 865 gallons of fuel - and arrived very close to where Brown’s navigation said they would.

On December 18, 1919 - six months after crossing the Atlantic - Sir John Alcock was dead. He was delivering a new Vickers Viking amphibian to the Paris Air Show when he flew into fog and low visibility near Rouen in northern France. The aircraft struck rising terrain. He was 36 years old.
Arthur Whitten Brown never flew again. He returned to industrial work, lived quietly, and died in 1948 - 28 years after losing his partner.
