The Prize That Restarted Aviation

The Daily Mail had offered £10,000 to the first crew to cross the North Atlantic non-stop by air. The prize was first announced in 1913, suspended during the war, and reinstated in 1919. In today’s terms, that figure is roughly £1 million - more than enough to draw serious competition from serious men.

Sixteen teams entered. The required route ran from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to the coast of Ireland or Britain: approximately 1,890 miles of open ocean with no emergency landing options, no rescue infrastructure, and no radio navigation of any kind.

Why the Atlantic Nearly Won

Seven months after the end of World War One, skilled aviators were flooding the job market as squadrons disbanded and aircraft sold for scrap. The manufacturers who had built bombers by the thousands needed a reason to keep building. The prize gave both groups a purpose.

The Atlantic did not cooperate. Several teams crashed during preparation. In May 1919, Harry Hawker and Kenneth Mackenzie-Grieve got roughly five hours out over the ocean before their engine overheated and they were forced to ditch. A small Danish steamer happened to cross their position and pulled them out. Everyone in aviation understood what that meant: you would not necessarily get a second chance.

Who Were Alcock and Brown?

John Alcock was 26 years old at the time of the flight. Born in Manchester, son of a horse dealer, he had been drawn to aviation before powered aircraft were common. He flew with the Royal Naval Air Service during the war, flew over the Dardanelles, was shot down, and spent two years as a prisoner of the Turks. He used that captivity to study navigation, meteorology, and long-distance flight planning. He came out with a plan.

Arthur Whitten Brown was 32, born in Glasgow to American parents and raised in Manchester. He was an engineer first and a navigator by exceptional skill. He had also been shot down during the war and spent time in a German prisoner of war camp. His particular gift was celestial navigation - the ability to take a star sight from a moving aircraft and translate it into a usable position fix. In 1919, when oceanic air navigation was being invented in real time, that skill was worth more than almost anything else.

Together they were a complete crew. Alcock could fly the aircraft through conditions that would have broken other men. Brown could tell him where they were.

The Aircraft: Vickers Vimy

The Vickers Vimy was a twin-engine biplane bomber built during the war, powered by two Rolls-Royce Eagle VIII engines, each producing 360 horsepower, with a 68-foot wingspan. For the transatlantic attempt, the crew stripped out everything non-essential - bomb racks, military wireless, extra instrumentation - and filled the weight allowance with fuel. Fully loaded, the aircraft weighed close to 13,000 pounds.

The takeoff field at Lester’s Field outside St. John’s was not an airfield. It was a bog meadow cleared by hand over several weeks, rocks and tree stumps pulled out, the worst holes filled in. The usable run was approximately 400 yards, with a stone wall at the far end and open ocean beyond it.

The Takeoff

At roughly half past one local time on June 14, they started the engines, ran them up, and began to roll. The soft ground kept the wheels sinking. Alcock held the aircraft on the surface as long as possible, building every knot of airspeed before committing. Brown later said he was watching the stone wall at the far end and the math was not encouraging.

They cleared the wall. Brown said it was close enough that he decided not to look.

What Went Wrong - And When

Within the first 40 minutes, the exhaust pipe on the starboard engine cracked. Hot gas began venting directly into the slipstream past the open cockpit. Communication by voice became impossible. The two men switched to passing handwritten notes and yelling directly into each other’s ears for urgent messages.

One hour out, the wireless radio failed completely. They were over open ocean with no way to report their position, no distress signal capability, and no contact with anyone. Alcock kept going.

As darkness fell, Brown began the work that made the crossing possible. There was no electronic navigation of any kind - no Loran, no VOR, no GPS. Brown had a magnetic compass, a drift indicator, and a bubble sextant.

Taking a star sight from an open cockpit biplane at 100 knots means holding the instrument perfectly steady against engine vibration, acquiring a star, bringing it to the horizon, and recording the exact time to within a second. Brown did this repeatedly through the crossing, producing position fixes that let Alcock correct for wind drift and hold their heading for Ireland. They were navigating. Not guessing.

The Spiral Dive

Around three in the morning, they entered dense cloud with no horizon. Alcock had a compass, altimeter, and airspeed indicator - and no gyroscopic attitude instrument of any kind. Without an artificial horizon, spatial disorientation is not a risk over open water at night. It is a certainty.

The Vimy entered a spiral dive. The bank steepened. Airspeed built. The altimeter unwound. Alcock tried to correct and could not determine whether his corrections were working.

They came out of the cloud base at approximately 50 feet above the water.

Brown said he could see the wave tops beneath them. Alcock hauled back and the Vimy shuddered level. They had been seconds from the ocean. Alcock then flew the aircraft on instruments through cloud for the remainder of the night, trusting his turn-and-bank indicator over every instinct his body had about which way was up.

Brown on the Wing: Six Times

Wet cloud at altitude coated the aircraft in ice. The air intakes on both Rolls-Royce engines began to clog. Ice restricts airflow, reduces combustion, costs power. If the intakes blocked completely, both engines would quit over the open Atlantic in the dark.

Brown stood up and climbed out of the cockpit onto the lower wing. In flight. In the dark. In freezing air over the North Atlantic Ocean. He worked hand-over-hand along the interplane struts to the starboard engine nacelle, attacked the ice with a penknife, chipped it away, and climbed back to the cockpit. He did this six times during the crossing.

This is not figurative language. It is documented in Brown’s own account and in the Vickers company records.

Landfall and Landing

When the sky lightened on the morning of June 15, both men had been airborne for more than 15 hours. Brown spotted the dark green coast of County Galway, Ireland - Connemara coming up out of the Atlantic morning. He grabbed Alcock’s arm and pointed.

Alcock brought the Vimy down toward the bog near the wireless station at Clifden, their intended destination. The surface looked flat and smooth from the air. It was Derrigimlagh Bog. The wheels sank into the peat on touchdown and the aircraft nosed over immediately, burying itself in the mud. Both propellers shattered. The nose crumpled.

Both men climbed out uninjured.

Total time airborne: 16 hours and 27 minutes. Distance: 1,890 miles. Average groundspeed: approximately 115 mph. A postal worker from the Clifden wireless station reached them first, and Alcock handed him a bag of mail - completing, in the same gesture, the first transatlantic airmail delivery in history.

The Aftermath

Winston Churchill, then Secretary of State for War and Air, personally presented the £10,000 Daily Mail prize. Within days, King George V knighted both men: Sir John Alcock and Sir Arthur Whitten Brown.

Sir John Alcock did not see out the year. On December 18, 1919, he flew a new Vickers Viking amphibious aircraft to the Paris air show. He entered fog over Normandy, descended into terrain he could not see, and was killed on impact. He was 27 years old and had been home from the Atlantic for six months.

Sir Arthur Whitten Brown never flew again - not a single flight after the crossing. He lived until 1948, long enough to see jet aircraft and the beginning of regular transatlantic passenger service. He reportedly told people there was simply nothing left to prove.

Why Lindbergh Got the Parade and Alcock and Brown Did Not

Eight years after the Irish bog landing, in 1927, Charles Lindbergh crossed the Atlantic alone in the Spirit of St. Louis and became the most famous aviator who ever lived. Lindbergh himself credited Alcock and Brown. He said they had answered the three questions that needed answering: could an engine run reliably for sixteen hours over open water; could a navigator hold an accurate course without landmarks; could a crew survive the weather that lived between Newfoundland and Ireland.

Alcock and Brown answered all three in a single flight. They simply did not have Lindbergh’s gift for the spotlight. Alcock was quiet and methodical. Brown was an engineer. They did the thing, took the prize, got knighted, and one of them died before the year was out. No ticker-tape parade. No book deal. No movie.

Why This Matters for Pilots

Every instrument-rated pilot today trains for inadvertent IMC with a certified attitude indicator, a backup AI, and hours of practiced hood work. Alcock flew a spiral dive in solid cloud over the open Atlantic at night with nothing but a turn-and-bank indicator, came out at 50 feet above the water, and climbed back to altitude. Brown navigated 1,890 miles of featureless ocean by starlight using a hand-held sextant and a stopwatch and arrived within range of his planned destination.

The technology every pilot flies with today exists in part because these two men identified, in real time and at real cost, exactly what the ocean and the atmosphere would throw at a transatlantic crew.
