Who Was Harold Gillam?

He flew for Alaska Airways in the early years before building his own operations, hauling construction crews, government officials, and cargo to corners of the territory that had no other access. By the late 1930s, he was one of the indispensable men of Alaskan aviation.

Gillam was a gifted natural pilot. The 1943 Crash

By January 1943, Alaska had been transformed by the war. The Japanese had occupied Attu and Kiska in the Aleutian chain since June 1942 - American soil under foreign control for the first time since 1812. Military construction was sprawling across the territory, and the urgency of wartime pressed on every operation.

Gillam, then 40 years old, was flying for the Morrison-Knudsen Corporation. On January 5, 1943, he lifted off from Seattle in a Lockheed Model Ten Electra with five passengers aboard, bound for Anchorage via the Inside Passage through Southeast Alaska.

The January weather in that corridor was what it always is: persistent overcast, rain and snow mixing at lower elevations, mountains rising straight from salt water to several thousand feet. Somewhere in that terrain southeast of Ketchikan, something went wrong. The exact sequence of events was never fully reconstructed. What is known is that the Electra came down on a steep slope, hit the trees, and came to rest on a mountainside.

All six people aboard walked out of the wreckage alive.

Thirty-Five Days in the Mountains

Surviving the crash was the first miracle. What followed required something else entirely.

The survivors sheltered in the Electra’s fuselage. They built fires when they could find dry material and rationed what food they had salvaged. Passenger Percy Cutting worked on the damaged radio and eventually coaxed an intermittent signal out of it - not strong, but enough to transmit.

The search began immediately when the aircraft was reported overdue. Army aircraft and Civil Air Patrol flew whenever weather permitted, which in Southeast Alaska in January was rarely. Dense timber, deep snow, and a hundred identical drainages made the search grid enormous. The radio fragments gave searchers a rough area, but rough in those mountains covers a lot of ground.

Gillam was injured. The cold was worsening his condition. But he also understood what the others did not, having flown that coast hundreds of times: he knew where salt water was relative to their position. If he could reach the water, there was a chance of signaling a vessel or finding a cabin. The intermittent radio signal was not a guarantee of rescue.

He left the other survivors at the crash site and headed out on foot.

The Walk That Didn’t End Well

In summer, the brush in those mountains slows a healthy man to a crawl. In January it’s loaded with snow, branches at head height, the ground unreliable underfoot, every stream crossing a risk because wet feet in that temperature begin a countdown. Gillam was injured. He went anyway.

On February 9, 1943, thirty-five days after the crash, rescuers reached the crash site and brought out four survivors - cold, weakened, but alive. Five weeks in a wrecked airplane on an Alaskan mountainside, and they made it.

Gillam was not among them. He had made the journey. He had fought through the terrain, through January in the mountains above the Inside Passage, and he had reached salt water. He had gotten himself to a beach on the coast.

He was found there, not long after the others were rescued. Exposure had taken him at the edge of the water, before anyone passed close enough to see him. He was 40 years old.

The Alaska of the 1920s and 1930s was close to 600,000 square miles with no roads and no railroads across most of it. Aviation didn’t just change transportation - it changed survival. The men who built those early routes - Noel Wien, Carl Ben Eielson, Joe Crosson, Gillam - flew without weather forecasting worth speaking of, without reliable navigation aids, in cold drafty cockpits with incomplete charts. They did it because miners, trappers, government men, and patients needed things, and there was no other way.

Gillam’s story illustrates a risk specific to reputation-driven flying. When you become known as the man who goes when no one else will, that identity creates pressure - from contractors who need crews moved, and from the internal demand of a self-image built entirely on willingness to push.
