A propeller cracked in the air and the Wright Flyer came down hard. Orville was badly injured, and Selfridge was killed - the first person ever to die in the crash of a powered airplane. One of Curtiss’s own AEA brothers was lost in a Wright machine, in the very season the two camps were squaring up to fight.

Curtiss didn’t stand still. In 1910, less than two years after the June Bug, he flew from Albany down the Hudson River to New York City - about 150 miles - to claim a $10,000 newspaper prize, a fortune at the time.
He went on to develop the practical seaplane at San Diego, taught the U.S. Navy to fly, and built the flying boats that would eventually cross oceans. His Curtiss JN-4 “Jenny” trained much of America’s first generation of pilots, including many of the early barnstormers.
