The team engineered a hot water drilling system - a device that used high-pressure heated water to bore a shaft roughly eight feet in diameter through the ice. The shaft required continuous rewarming to prevent it from closing back in; glacial ice is always trying to reclaim any void opened in it. Teams worked in relays. Equipment ran around the clock. Foot by foot, the shaft descended.
In 1992, they reached the bottom and found an airplane.
It was not pristine. Sixty years of glacial pressure had been honest about that. The cockpit had been compressed to roughly three feet of headroom. The twin-boom tail was bent. Other parts came through the warbird network - quiet phone calls, connections, and the goodwill of people who understood what rare means.
The two Allison V-1710 engines, one on each side producing over 1,000 horsepower each, were rebuilt by specialists who understood what these powerplants needed to run reliably. The Allison had earned a complicated reputation during the war. Early P-38s delivered to the British in Europe struggled at altitude, ran cold cockpits at high altitude over Germany, and briefly made the Lightning look like a disappointment in that theater.
The Pacific told a different story. Richard Bong flew a P-38 to 40 aerial victories, the highest total of any American pilot in the war. Tommy McGuire recorded 38 kills before dying at age 38, maneuvering to protect a wingman over the Philippines. Japanese pilots gave the Lightning a name of their own: the fork-tailed devil.
Glacier Girl was an early-production P-38F, closer to the beginning of the type than to its combat-refined peak. The restoration honored what she was, not what the Lightning eventually became. Dane Ward, the aircraft’s eventual owner, funded the project through completion.
