Smithsonian restoration specialists have documented more than 1,000 individual wartime repairs to the airframe. Every patch is the record of a German shell burst that found the airplane and failed to bring it down.
Why the B-26 Marauder Was Nearly Cancelled Before It Ever Flew Combat
The Glenn L. Martin Company submitted their B-26 design to the Army Air Corps in July 1939 under an unusual procurement requirement: no prototype phase. The Army wanted a production-ready aircraft fast - they were watching Europe and didn’t like what they saw. Martin delivered. The aircraft featured a cylindrical low-drag fuselage, two Pratt & Whitney R-2800 radial engines, and a design philosophy centered on one objective: speed.
That speed came at a cost. The early B-26 had a wing loading of roughly 53 pounds per square foot. The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress came in around 38 pounds per square foot. Flak Bait’s Assignment and the Brutal Introduction to Combat
Flak Bait arrived in England in early 1943, assigned to the 449th Bombardment Squadron, 322nd Bomb Group, Ninth Air Force. The 322nd was among the first B-26 groups to fly combat in the European Theater, and their introduction to the war was brutal.
In May 1943, the group was ordered on low-level missions against industrial targets in the Netherlands. The tactical premise was that high speed at low altitude would confuse German defenses. It did not. At low altitude, German anti-aircraft crews had clear shooting angles, and the B-26’s speed advantage nearly disappeared on the deck. On a mission against a power station at Ijmuiden, the group dispatched 11 aircraft. The losses were near-total.

The 322nd and the other B-26 groups of the Ninth Air Force were tasked with suppressing German coastal defenses, hitting troop concentrations, and keeping the Luftwaffe occupied while the men on the beaches fought their way ashore. Flak Bait flew that day. She came back.
She kept coming back - through D-Day plus one, through the summer and fall of 1944, into 1945, as the Allied armies pushed east across France and into Germany. When Germany surrendered in May 1945, the 322nd had one aircraft that had flown more combat missions than any other in their inventory: 202. The name painted on the nose was Flak Bait.
The Restoration at Udvar-Hazy and Why It Matters
The nose section came to the Smithsonian and was displayed for years at the National Air and Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington. The rest of the airframe sat in storage at the Paul E. Garber Preservation, Restoration and Storage Facility in Suitland, Maryland, waiting for the resources a full restoration would require.
That restoration is now underway at Udvar-Hazy. The Smithsonian has made it a public-facing project - visitors stand at the viewing windows and watch professional restoration specialists work on the artifact in real time. Nearly 5,000 B-26 Marauders were built over the production run. After the war, almost all were scrapped. Today, Flak Bait is the only combat-veteran B-26 Marauder in the United States.
