Under FAR 91.155, a VFR pilot in Class E airspace below 10,000 feet must have at least 3 statute miles of flight visibility and stay 1,000 feet above, 500 feet below, and 2,000 feet horizontally from any cloud. These aren’t arbitrary numbers - they’re a buffer of reaction time that keeps you separated from IFR traffic you can’t see punching out of that cloud. The rule scales up as you climb and, dangerously, relaxes down low in Class G.

Why do VFR cloud clearance rules exist?

The cloud clearance rules aren’t there to protect you from the cloud. Clouds are soft - you can fly through one and nothing happens to the airplane. The cloud doesn’t care.

The rule protects you from what’s inside the cloud and what’s coming out the other side. Behind that cloud there may be an airplane on an IFR flight plan descending out of the base at 150 knots. That pilot is legally in the cloud, cannot see you, and is trusting the system to keep you away.

The system says that when you fly under visual flight rules, you stay a specific distance from that cloud so that when either of you pops out, there’s enough time and space to avoid a collision. The cloud clearances are a buffer - reaction time measured in feet.

What are the VFR minimums in Class E below 10,000 feet?

This is where most of us fly: Class E airspace below 10,000 feet. Most cross-country time, most training, that airplane over the farmland at 4,500 feet - that’s Class E.

The rule is three, one, five, two thousand:

  • 3 statute miles of flight visibility
  • 1,000 feet above the clouds
  • 500 feet below the clouds
  • 2,000 feet horizontal from the clouds

There’s a mnemonic passed down in flight schools for decades because it’s a little silly and it sticks. The airplane most of us learned in: the Cessna 152.

C-1-5-2. One thousand above. Five hundred below. Two thousand horizontal. The airplane tells you the rule every time you say its name.

Why is 2,000 feet horizontal the number that gets people?

One thousand above and five hundred below you can kind of feel - you have an altimeter, and you can look up and down. But 2,000 feet sideways from a cloud? Nobody has a good instinct for that. Two thousand feet is about a third of a nautical mile - far more distance than it feels like through a hazy windscreen.

Here’s the trap. A wall of cumulus builds off your left wing. It looks close, but it’s hard to say. That cloud is almost always closer than you think, because haze compresses distance and your eye wants to believe you have room.

Pilots skim right down the edge of a cloud feeling comfortably clear, and they’re 400 feet away - not 2,000. On the far side could be someone breaking out of an approach.

The practical fix: When you’re paralleling a cloud, give it far more room than your gut says. If it feels close, it’s closer than the rule allows. Turn away. Descend. Build the buffer on purpose, before you need it.

What are the VFR minimums above 10,000 feet?

At 10,000 feet and above, still in Class E, the rules get bigger:

  • 5 statute miles of flight visibility
  • 1,000 feet above the clouds
  • 1,000 feet below the clouds
  • 1 statute mile horizontal from the clouds

Why bigger up high? Speed. Airplanes up there move faster - a jet doesn’t need to be in the flight levels to be doing 250 knots, and above 10,000 they can be quicker still. Faster closure means you need more warning. More visibility, more distance. The rule scales with the danger.

The shorthand up high: five, one thousand, one thousand, one mile. More room for more speed.

One edge case that shows up on checkrides: the 10,000-foot rule only applies when you’re also more than 1,200 feet above the surface. Over high terrain - if the ground is near 10,000 feet and you’re only a few hundred feet over it - you’re still playing by the lower, closer-in rules. The regulation cares about your height above the ground, not just the number on the altimeter. Don’t let that catch you over the mountains.

Why is Class G airspace the most dangerous for VFR minimums?

Class G - uncontrolled airspace, down low - hurts the most people, and it’s not the complicated stuff.

Everybody treats Class G as the wild west: no tower, no controller. Daytime visibility can drop to 1 statute mile, which sounds generous and free. But here’s the part that bites: in Class G during the day, at or below 1,200 feet AGL, the cloud clearance is just “clear of clouds.” No specific distance. Just don’t be in it.

“Clear of clouds” plus “1 mile visibility” is a legal recipe for a genuinely dangerous situation. One mile of visibility in haze, scud running down low, skimming right along the bottom of the overcast - that is legal. It’s also exactly the picture in a hundred accident reports. Legal and safe are not the same word, and this is the regulation that proves it.

At night in Class G, the requirements tighten back up, because your eyes can’t do the job the same way in the dark. What you can get away with in daylight will kill you after sunset.

How do I actually use these numbers in flight?

You don’t compute cloud clearances with a ruler. You use them as a line in the sand you drew before you left the ground.

When the weather is closing in, the visibility is getting soft, and the clouds are getting lower, the regulation tells you the game is over before your optimism does. It gives you a hard number to hang your decision on, so that “I think I can make it” runs into “I am now below legal minimums - and those minimums are already generous - so I am turning around.”

That’s the gift of the rule: it makes the decision for you when you’re least equipped to make it yourself. Continued VFR flight into deteriorating weather is one of the oldest killers in general aviation, near the top of the list for as long as anyone has kept the list. FAR 91.155 is a tripwire designed to stop it - if you let it.

Build the instinct now. On your next flight - even a clear, calm day - pick a cloud and ask out loud: Am I 2,000 feet from that? A thousand above it? Practice when a wrong guess costs you nothing, because the day you actually need this rule is not the day to be doing the math for the first time.
