Under FAR 91.155, the basic VFR weather minimums for most of the airspace a student and new private pilot will fly - Class E, and Class C and D below 10,000 feet - are 3 statute miles of visibility, 500 feet below the clouds, 1,000 feet above the clouds, and 2,000 feet horizontally from the clouds. An easy way to remember it: think of a Cessna 152. Three, one, five, two - 3 miles visibility, 1,000 above, 500 below, 2,000 horizontal. These numbers exist to give you and any airplane you can’t see yet enough time to react before you try to occupy the same piece of sky.

Why do VFR weather minimums exist?

The entire VFR system rests on one idea: see and avoid. You look out the window, find the other traffic, and don’t hit it.

The problem is that not everyone up there is flying VFR. Somewhere out there is an airplane in the clouds on an IFR clearance, being vectored by air traffic control, and at some point it’s going to come out the bottom or the side of a cloud on an approach.

Picture it from your seat. You’re cruising along on a clear day with a puffy cloud off your right wing. If you could fly right up against the edge of that cloud, and an IFR airplane came out of it at 150 knots, you’d have no time to see him and turn. He was invisible one second and filling your windshield the next.

So the regulation builds you a buffer: a cushion of empty air between you and every cloud, plus a minimum visibility so you can see far enough ahead to do something about what you find. FAR 91.155 is reaction time written into law. Every number is somebody’s stopwatch.

What are the basic VFR minimums below 10,000 feet?

For most of your early flying - Class E airspace, and Class C and D around towered fields, all below 10,000 feet - the minimums are identical. Learn them as one package:

  • 3 statute miles of visibility
  • 500 feet below the clouds
  • 1,000 feet above the clouds
  • 2,000 feet horizontally from the clouds

The mnemonic that makes it stick: Cessna 152 → 3, 1, 5, 2. Three miles visibility, one thousand above, five hundred below, two thousand horizontal. The airplane you probably trained in is also your memory aid. Say it out loud a few times and you’ll never lose it.

What do those cloud clearances look like in the airplane?

The numbers stay abstract until you put an airplane in the picture.

500 feet below isn’t much room. If a cloud deck has bases at 3,500 feet, you can legally fly at 3,000 feet and no higher. Drift up to 3,200 and you’re now illegally close. That buffer isn’t for the FAA - it’s for the pilot descending out of that deck who needs to see you before he’s on top of you.

1,000 feet above is a bigger cushion because fast IFR traffic closing from above and below is the greater threat.

2,000 feet horizontal is the one people forget. Those fair-weather cumulus on a summer afternoon each need a 2,000-foot berth - more than a third of a mile. When you’re threading between building clouds and it feels like a video game, remember you’re legally supposed to keep almost half a mile off each one. If you can’t, the sky is telling you it’s closing up.

What are the VFR minimums in Class B airspace?

Class B airspace - the big airspace over major airports - is the easy exception: 3 statute miles of visibility and clear of clouds. That’s it. No 500, no 1,000, no 2,000.

Why so relaxed on cloud clearance? Because in Class B, everyone is talking to air traffic control and getting positive separation. The controller keeps the airplanes apart, so the regulation doesn’t need to build in as much see-and-avoid cushion. Just stay out of the clouds and keep your three miles.

What are the VFR minimums in Class G airspace?

Class G (uncontrolled) airspace is where new pilots get burned. During the day, at or below 1,200 feet AGL, the minimums drop to 1 statute mile of visibility and clear of clouds.

That sounds generous, and legally it is - but legal and safe are not the same word. One mile of visibility clear of clouds close to the ground is legal scud running. That rule exists mostly for crop dusters and pilots operating off private strips who know every wire and tower in the county. For a low-time pilot on a cross-country, one mile down low is a trap - the kind of number that lures you down under a lowering ceiling, following a road, until the road bends and you don’t.

At night in Class G, below 1,200 feet AGL, it tightens back up to 3 miles and 500/1,000/2,000, the same as controlled airspace. At night, see-and-avoid barely works - all you have are position lights, and you need every bit of that visibility to find them.

What changes at or above 10,000 feet MSL?

At or above 10,000 feet MSL in controlled airspace, the minimums go up to 5 statute miles of visibility, 1,000 feet below the clouds, 1,000 feet above, and 1 statute mile horizontal.

Why the jump? Speed. Above 10,000 feet you can legally fly faster, so airplanes close on each other more quickly. You need to see farther and give clouds a wider berth to get the same reaction time. It’s the same stopwatch - the clock just runs faster up high, so the numbers grow to keep up. Think of it as five miles, and a thousand, a thousand, and a mile.

How do I make a real VFR go/no-go decision?

The Airman Certification Standards expect you to know these minimums cold and apply them to a real go/no-go decision. The examiner isn’t looking for a parrot reciting “three, one, five, two” - they want a pilot who can read a weather briefing, look at the airspace along the route, and say honestly whether the flight can be made legally and safely.

Work through a scenario. Your departure airport reports 6 miles visibility, few clouds at 4,500 feet. Your destination, 90 minutes away, is forecast for 4 miles visibility and a broken layer at 2,500 feet, in Class E airspace.

Here are the steps:

  1. Check visibility. Four miles at the destination - Class E needs three, and you have four. Legal.
  2. Check cloud clearance. A broken layer at 2,500 feet means you must stay 500 feet below, so no higher than 2,000 feet.
  3. Check terrain against that ceiling. Can you safely cruise at 2,000 feet on that leg? What’s the tallest obstacle? Check the Maximum Elevation Figure in each sectional grid. If you’re squeezed between a 2,500-foot ceiling and a 1,500-foot ridge, your safe altitude window just got very narrow.
  4. Draw your personal line on the ground. A forecast is a forecast - the clouds can come down and the visibility can drop. Ninety minutes into a flight, tired and watching the ceiling squeeze you toward a ridgeline, is the worst possible moment to do this math for the first time.

Decide at the kitchen table, before you start the engine, what visibility and what ceiling turn this into a no-go. Write the number down. A limit you set in a warm room with a cup of coffee is one you’ll actually honor; a limit you invent in the cockpit while the weather goes down is one you’ll talk yourself right past.
