How Do You Land an Airplane on a Glacier?

The call went to Sheldon. At that altitude, near and above 10,000 feet, the Super Cub was flying at the absolute ragged edge of its capability, with the wing barely working and the engine barely breathing. There was no flat ground - only a slope of ice tilted like a barn roof, ringed with rock and crevasse.

He flew it anyway, over and over. He would claw the Cub up the valley, set it down on a sloping patch of snow no sane person would call a landing zone, fold one broken man into the tiny back seat, and fly him down to the valley floor. He knew the airplane the way you know your own hands in the dark. He knew what the wind did coming around a particular ridge at a particular hour, and he knew when the snow would hold a ski and when it would grab one and flip him. He flew right up against the line between bold and dead - on purpose - because on the other side of it were men who would die without him. That is not a daredevil. That is a professional.

The Don Sheldon Amphitheater and His Legacy

Sheldon flew that country for nearly thirty years, making an estimated 8,000 glacier landings - a number nobody, least of all Sheldon, ever counted precisely. He built a small hexagonal cabin on a rock knob high on the Ruth Glacier, a shelter for climbers that still stands today. The great natural bowl there, ringed by granite walls a mile high, is known as the Don Sheldon Amphitheater - about the grandest natural monument any airman ever earned.

He married late, to a woman named Roberta, and they had children. In a strange twist for a man who did the most dangerous flying in the country, the mountain never got him. Cancer took him in 1975, when he was only in his fifties, and he died in bed.

His craft did not die with him. Super Cubs are still flying in Alaska today on skis and big tundra tires, landing on gravel bars, glaciers, and ridgelines - flown by a new generation who learned the trade from the people who learned it from Sheldon.
