Don Sheldon was a Talkeetna, Alaska bush pilot who mastered the near-impossible art of landing ski-equipped airplanes on the steep, crevasse-riddled glaciers of Denali. From the 1950s until his death in 1975, he flew thousands of glacier landings, rescued stranded climbers, and helped cartographer Bradford Washburn produce the definitive map of North America’s highest peak. His technique - landing uphill to stop and taking off downhill to go - turned the mountain itself into his runway.
Who Was Don Sheldon?
Sheldon came to Alaska as a young man and worked construction and the railroad before catching the flying bug. In that country, an airplane wasn’t a hobby - it was the difference between a two-hour flight and a two-week walk through muskeg and bear country.
He flew in World War II as a gunner, later earned his own wings, and returned to Talkeetna to start an air service with little more than an airplane and a stubborn streak. Talkeetna sits at the end of a spur road where three rivers braid together at the foot of the Alaska Range. Today it’s the launch point for nearly everyone who climbs Denali; in Sheldon’s early days it was mostly trappers, prospectors, and a railroad depot.
The mountain he flew was labeled McKinley on the maps of the era, but Alaskans have always called it Denali - “The Great One.”
What Airplanes Did Don Sheldon Fly?
Two aircraft defined his career, both fitted with skis for glacier work.
The Piper Super Cub (PA-18) was his signature machine - about the simplest honest airplane ever built. Fabric over steel tube, two seats in tandem, and a Lycoming engine making roughly 150 horsepower. It flies impossibly slow, gets airborne in a couple hundred feet, and climbs like it has something to prove. Many pilots still argue nobody has ever improved on the bush-plane formula.
His second aircraft was a Cessna 180 - a little bigger and faster, able to haul more freight and more people. Sheldon put that one on skis too and flew it into places that make your palms sweat just from the photographs.
How Do You Land an Airplane on a Glacier?
Landing on a glacier is unlike landing anywhere else, and understanding why is the heart of Sheldon’s story.
A glacier is not flat. It runs uphill, sometimes steeply, and it’s riddled with crevasses - cracks in the ice that can swallow an airplane whole and are often hidden under fresh snow. The surface can be soft as a feather bed or hard as a parking lot, and you cannot tell which from the air. There’s no windsock, no radio, no distance markers.
Worst of all, glacier snow destroys depth perception. On a flat white slope under a flat white sky, you genuinely cannot tell how high you are or how fast the surface is rising toward you. Pilots have flown perfectly good airplanes straight into the snow because their eyes told them they had fifty feet when they had none.
Sheldon’s solution was to use the mountain against itself:
- Land uphill. Aim the airplane at a rising slope so the grade itself becomes the brakes, bleeding off speed faster than any runway could.
- Take off downhill. Swing around and let gravity supply the speed the thin mountain air wouldn’t give.
- Drag a ski. When he couldn’t judge the surface, he’d fly low and slow and just kiss the snow with one ski to read his height and the texture, then come around and land for real.
- Touch-and-unload. On slopes too steep and short for a full landing, he’d fly the airplane up against the hill, touch, unload passenger or cargo with the engine still roaring, then peel off down the mountain before the ice could grab him.
None of this was done on instruments. There weren’t any for the job. It was done with the eyes, the seat, the ears listening to the engine, and a feel earned only by doing it thousands of times - and being a little bit lucky every one of them.
The 1960 Denali Rescue
In 1960, a climbing expedition high on Denali came to grief. Climbers were injured and stranded, and one of them was gravely ill with altitude sickness that would kill her if she wasn’t brought down fast.
The weather was doing what it pleases up there. Sheldon flew his Super Cub up into the Ruth Glacier - into terrain where the ceiling is the mountain itself - and landed on ice at an altitude and grade the textbook calls impossible. Then he flew the survivors out one at a time, a single seat behind him, one life at a time back down the gorge.
Picture that cockpit on the descent: frost on the inside of the glass, a heater that’s a joke, the whole airframe drumming with the engine, and walls of rock and ice rising straight into the cloud on either side - close enough it feels like you could touch them. Down the middle he flew, following the crack in the world the glacier had carved, a dying person behind his shoulder, hoping the weather at the bottom would still let him in.
Mapping Denali with Bradford Washburn
Through the 1950s and 1960s, cartographer and mountaineer Bradford Washburn of the Boston museum set out to make the definitive map of Denali. That work required getting onto the mountain again and again, with cameras and survey gear, in every kind of light.
The man who put Washburn where he needed to be - finding the landing spots and threading airplanes up the glaciers into the high basins - was Don Sheldon. The map Washburn produced became the reference every Denali climber used for the next half century, and part of it was effectively drawn from the seat of Sheldon’s airplane.
The Sheldon Mountain House
Sheldon came to love one spot above all others: a great bowl deep in the Ruth Glacier, ringed by peaks, among the most beautiful places on earth.
In 1966 he built a small hexagonal, one-room cabin there, perched on a knob of rock in the middle of the ice - the Sheldon Mountain House. It still stands. The entire amphitheater now carries his name: the Don Sheldon Amphitheater. You can fly in and stay in that cabin to this day, surrounded by the walls of the Great Gorge, with ice thousands of feet deep beneath your feet, in a place no road will ever reach.
Why Don Sheldon Still Matters
Modern flying has grown softer - glass panels that fly the airplane for you, synthetic vision painting the terrain so you never have to look outside. Much of that has saved lives. But Sheldon dragging a ski across a glacier, because his own eyes were the only glacier sensor ever built, is a reminder worth keeping: the habit of actually flying the airplane, trusting what it tells you through the seat and the sound, and respecting a mountain enough to learn its moods.
Sheldon didn’t grow old telling these stories. Cancer took him in 1975, when he was only in his early fifties. But he had already flown more mountain than most pilots will ever see, and he brought a lot of people home who had no right to expect it.
