Sheldon flew Washburn into those positions, maneuvering through terrain at altitude to achieve the angles and sightlines the survey work required. The Sheldon Mountain House

In 1966, Sheldon did something no one had conceived of attempting before. He built a hut.

That culture was also a community - pilots backed each other up, competed, and understood collectively that the country they flew in would not forgive soft judgment.

In the early 1970s, he was diagnosed with cancer and continued flying through the illness.
