Doc, the B-29 Superfortress That Sat in the Desert for Decades and Came Home to Fly Again

Of the nearly 4,000 Boeing B-29 Superfortresses built during World War II, exactly two fly today. One of them - named Doc - spent decades sitting on the hardpan at China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station in the Mojave Desert before a decades-long volunteer restoration effort returned it to flight on July 17, 2016. Its story is one of the most significant warbird restorations in American aviation history.

What Made the B-29 a Revolutionary Aircraft

The War Department’s 1939 requirement was audacious: a bomber capable of flying more than 3,000 miles, carrying a heavy bomb load, at altitudes above the reach of enemy interceptors. Nobody was building anything close to it. Boeing won the contract and delivered something that, by any honest measure, was a miracle of engineering for its time.

The B-29 could operate at 31,000 feet - an altitude most Japanese fighter aircraft of World War II couldn’t consistently reach at combat speed. But altitude alone wasn’t what made it transformative.

The crew of eleven flew in pressurized, heated compartments. At 31,000 feet in 1943, most Allied aircrew were on oxygen masks, wrapped in heavy gear, exposed to temperatures far below zero in unpressurized fuselages. B-29 crews sat in a forward section housing the pilots, bombardier, navigator, and flight engineer, and an aft section for gunners - the two connected by a pressurized tunnel that ran over the bomb bays, barely wide enough to crawl through.

On 14-hour missions flown by crews averaging 18 to 20 years old, pressurization didn’t make the work comfortable. But it kept those men functional in ways that simply weren’t possible in any other aircraft of that era.

The Remotely Controlled Gun System That Predated Its Time

The B-29’s defensive armament was unlike anything that had been built before. Rather than manually operated turrets, it used remotely controlled turrets tied to a central fire control computer. Gunners sat in pressurized sighting blisters and controlled their weapons through a system that automatically calculated deflection. Multiple gunners could simultaneously aim at the same target, with the computer sorting the geometry in real time.

This was 1943 technology.

The Engine Problem That Killed Boeing’s Chief Test Pilot

The four Wright R-3350 Duplex Cyclone engines - 18 cylinders each, approximately 2,200 horsepower apiece - were the most powerful aircraft engines in production anywhere in the world at the time. They were also temperamental. They ran hot. They caught fire.

That problem killed Eddie Allen, Boeing’s chief test pilot, in 1943. An engine fire broke out during a test flight over Seattle. The crew couldn’t extinguish it. The aircraft went down.

Engineers worked around the clock to address cooling and fire issues. They improved things substantially but never completely solved them. Throughout the war, engine fires remained a constant threat on every B-29 mission, and every crew knew it when they started those engines.

How the B-29 Won the Pacific War

B-29s reached the Pacific in strength after the Marine Corps and Army captured the Mariana Islands - specifically to create bases within range of the Japanese home islands. General Curtis LeMay transformed the bombing campaign by bringing the bombers down from high altitude, loading them with incendiaries instead of high explosives, and sending mass formations over Japanese cities at night.

Tokyo burned in March 1945. City after city followed. The Japanese war economy began to collapse.

On August 6, 1945, a B-29 named Enola Gay, flying out of Tinian in the Marianas, dropped a single atomic weapon on Hiroshima. On August 9, Bockscar dropped a second on Nagasaki. Japan surrendered.

The B-29 won the Pacific. That is not an overstatement.

How Doc Got Its Name

The early B-29 crews flying the China-Burma-India theater named their aircraft after the seven dwarfs from Disney’s Snow White, released just before the war. It’s the kind of thing that happens when you’re twenty years old, far from home, and you need something human and familiar painted on the nose of the machine that might or might not bring you back. Doc was one of those names. The airplane carried it into combat and carried it back out.

Decades in the Desert: How Doc Survived

When the war ended, Doc survived the postwar drawdown that destroyed most of the fleet. Thousands of B-29s built at enormous cost were cut up for aluminum within years of V-J Day. Doc ended up with the Navy at China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station in the Mojave, used for weapons testing. At some point the operational flying stopped, and Doc was simply left on the desert floor.

The Mojave is not the worst place to store an airframe. The dry desert air slows corrosion dramatically. The heat is hard on rubber and plastics, but it keeps moisture out of aluminum structure. Doc sat at China Lake for decades - paint oxidizing, tires cracking, plexiglass gun blisters fogged to near opacity - but the airframe held.

Tony Mazzolini Finds Doc in 1987

In 1987, a man named Tony Mazzolini was visiting China Lake for reasons unrelated to aviation. He saw a 141-foot wingspan stretched across the desert hardpan. Four engine nacelles still in place. The unmistakable silhouette of a B-29, with no fence, no historical marker. Just sitting there.

Mazzolini decided he was going to bring it back to life.

Getting an aircraft released from a naval weapons testing facility is not a simple transaction. What followed was years of negotiations, government paperwork, and bureaucratic persistence that would have worn out most people.

Eventually, through the organization Mazzolini built - Doc’s Friends - the aircraft was acquired and transported to Wichita, Kansas.

Why Wichita: Bringing Doc Home

The choice of Wichita was deliberate. Boeing’s Wichita plant produced hundreds of B-29s during the war, rolling them off the line as fast as workers could build them. Bringing Doc back to Wichita, to a hangar at what is now Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, wasn’t merely logistical. It was, in a very real sense, bringing her home.

The Restoration: What It Actually Takes

The scope of work was staggering. Doc’s Friends assembled volunteers from across the aviation world: mechanics with careers on large radial engines, sheet metal workers, retired airline maintenance professionals, and engineers who could read a 1944 Boeing drawing and understand what they were looking at.

When an airplane has been sitting exposed for more than 50 years, nothing is assumed serviceable. Every rivet, every control cable, every structural member, every square inch of aluminum skin was inspected and evaluated. In a significant number of cases, the decision was to replace.

The four R-3350s were completely torn down and rebuilt from the inside out. The fuel system, hydraulics, and electrical system - wiring that predated every modern standard, after half a century of desert heat - were all addressed. Sourcing parts for a B-29 in the 21st century means finding what exists in the warbird community, and fabricating what doesn’t. The restoration community is small and generous, and those relationships matter.

Volunteers put in thousands of hours across years of evenings, weekends, and vacation days. There were setbacks, funding pressure, and moments when the project must have looked impossible from the inside.

July 17, 2016: Doc Flies Again

On July 17, 2016, Doc lifted off from Wichita’s airport for the first time in over 60 years.

Four R-3350s came to life on the ramp. The props began to turn. A massive silver airplane rolled forward.

And then she flew.

Doc now appears at major airshows including EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. When she makes a low pass down a flight line, you hear those four big radials before you see her.

She carries all of it - the ones who came home and the ones who didn’t - every time those engines start.

Restoration done at this level is a refusal to let the real thing disappear while we still have access to it. It is deciding that history should be hearable and present, not just something in a book.
