A Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) is a point forecast of expected weather within about 5 statute miles of an airport over roughly the next 24 to 30 hours. The three groups that trip up most pilots are BECMG (a permanent, gradual change that stays), TEMPO (brief fluctuations that come and go), and PROB (a 30–40% chance of significant weather). Master those three and the whole forecast turns from cryptic code into a clear story of your flying day.

What Is a TAF and Why Does It Matter?

A METAR tells you what the weather is doing right now at an airport. A TAF is the meteorologist’s best professional judgment of what the weather will do at that airport over roughly the next 24 to 30 hours, within about a 5 statute mile radius of the airport reference point.

That radius matters. A TAF is a point forecast - it describes the airport, not your whole route. When planning a cross-country, you stitch together the departure TAF, the destination TAF, and anything useful in between, then fill the gaps with bigger-picture products like the Graphical Forecasts for Aviation (GFA).

Why You Should Always Read the Valid Period First

The valid period at the top of a TAF is not decoration. A forecast might read valid from the 20th at 1800Z to the 21st at 1800Z. If your flight is planned for two hours after that forecast expires, you’re reading old news.

Always confirm your flight falls inside the valid window. This is also a checkride habit examiners watch for - when they hand you a weather packet, one of the first things they look for is whether you even notice the valid times.

A Real Scenario: The $200 Hamburger Run

Picture yourself as a fresh private pilot flying a Cessna 172 to an airport about 80 nautical miles away for a hamburger. You pull up the destination TAF, and after the identifier and valid period, you see the prevailing conditions:

  • Winds from 240 at 8 knots
  • Visibility better than 6 statute miles (written as P6SM)
  • A scattered layer at 5,000 feet

That’s your baseline - the dominant, most likely condition for the period. Good VFR. But the forecast keeps going, and that’s where the three groups appear.

What Does BECMG (Becoming) Mean in a TAF?

BECMG describes a permanent change expected to happen gradually over a defined window, usually about two hours. The key word is permanent: the weather transitions to a new state and stays there after the transition finishes.

Say the TAF reads BECMG 1400/1600, then winds shifting to 330 at 15 gusting 22 knots. That tells you a wind shift is coming sometime in that two-hour window - the wind swings northwest and picks up, and once it does, it stays that way for the rest of the forecast until another group says otherwise.

Why it matters: If your arrival is planned for 1530Z, right in the middle of that becoming window, think hard about the runway in use and your crosswind component. A wind from 330 at 15G22 onto a north-south runway is manageable. Onto an east-west runway, you’re facing a serious gusting crosswind - check it against your personal limits and the airplane’s demonstrated crosswind component. BECMG quietly reshapes the back half of your flight.

What Does TEMPO (Temporary) Mean, and How Is It Different from BECMG?

TEMPO describes temporary fluctuations - conditions expected to come and go during a window, with each occurrence lasting less than one hour and, in total, covering less than half the window. Most of the time you’ll have the prevailing condition; every now and then, briefly, expect something else to pop up.

Suppose the TAF reads TEMPO 1600/2000, visibility 3 statute miles in light rain and mist, and a broken layer at 1,200 feet. During that four-hour window the prevailing condition is still your scattered layer at 5,000 - but temporarily, off and on, expect visibility to drop to 3 miles and the ceiling to slam down to 1,200 broken.

For a VFR pilot in Class E airspace, the cloud clearance requirement is 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal, plus 3 statute miles visibility. A 1,200-foot broken ceiling with 3 miles of visibility in rain and mist is right on the ragged edge of legal VFR - and past the edge of smart VFR for most low-time pilots.

The honest question TEMPO forces: What’s my plan if I arrive right when that temporary condition is happening? Not on average - at that exact moment. If you don’t have a solid answer (an alternate, extra fuel, the discipline to hold or divert), a TEMPO group in the rain is a giant yellow flag to build in options before you launch.

The core difference: BECMG is going to happen and stay. TEMPO might happen briefly, go away, and maybe happen again.

What Does PROB30 or PROB40 Mean in a TAF?

A PROB group tells you there’s a measurable but lower probability - 30 to 40 percent - of specific conditions occurring during a window, usually something significant like thunderstorms. You’ll see it written as PROB30 or PROB40.

You never see PROB50 or higher: once the probability climbs past 40 percent, the forecaster is confident enough to put it in the main forecast or a TEMPO group instead.

Picture a line reading PROB30 1800/2200, visibility 1 statute mile, thunderstorm, heavy rain - roughly a one-in-three chance of a thunderstorm during your return window.

Be direct about this: a 30 percent chance of a thunderstorm is not a 30 percent problem. If that storm shows up while you’re departing in a light single, it’s a 100 percent problem. Thunderstorms are a no-go, full stop, for airplanes like these. Treat a convective PROB group as a planning trigger, not a coin flip - go earlier, go later, or pick a closer destination.

How Do You Read the Whole TAF as One Story?

Reading these groups in isolation isn’t the goal - reading them as one narrative is. Told as a story, our destination TAF sounds like this:

For the first several hours, expect good VFR with light southwesterly winds and high scattered clouds. In the early afternoon, the wind becomes northwesterly and gusty and stays that way. Through the late afternoon, temporarily and off and on, the ceiling and visibility drop into marginal VFR in rain and mist. And in the evening, there’s about a one-in-three chance of a thunderstorm.

Say it out loud like that and you’re no longer staring at a wall of code - you’re hearing the arc of the day. That’s the skill: turning the code back into a sentence.

How Should You Practice Reading TAFs?

Pull up a real TAF tonight, before you ever preflight, and practice turning it back into a plain-English sentence. Do it ten times and the next briefing will feel completely different.

And remember the TAF is only one piece. Pair it with the Graphical Forecasts for Aviation, check AIRMETs and SIGMETs for the enroute picture, review the winds and temperatures aloft, and when in doubt, call a briefer. Getting a standard briefing and asking questions is a mark of a sharp pilot, not a weak one.
