Positioning your flight controls for the wind while you taxi keeps a gust from lifting a wing and tipping your airplane on the ground. The rule is simple: when the wind comes from ahead, turn the yoke into the wind and hold the elevator neutral or slightly aft; when it comes from behind, turn the yoke away from the wind and push the elevator down. Pilots remember it as “climb into it, dive away from it.”

Why Flight Control Position Matters While Taxiing

Your airplane is a wing, and a wing exists for one purpose: to turn moving air into lift. The wing does not know whether you are at rotation speed on the runway or sitting still on the taxiway. If air moves across it fast enough, it makes lift - it does not check with you first.

On a calm day this is a non-issue. But a 30-knot gust from the side or quarter is the same as 30 knots of airflow over that wing, and that is close to flying speed for many light airplanes. A wing that starts making lift on one side while the other side stays planted wants to lift, roll, and in the worst case tip you onto a wingtip.

This applies to every airplane - tricycle gear, taildragger, high wing, low wing. All of them can be upset by wind on the ground. Proper control positioning takes the wing’s power away from the wind, deflecting the gust down or away instead of letting it get underneath a surface and lift it.

What Is the Rule for Positioning Controls for Wind?

The rule has two halves:

  • Wind from ahead of the wings: Turn the yoke toward the wind (aileron into the wind). Hold the elevator neutral or slightly up.
  • Wind from behind the wings: Turn the yoke away from the wind. Push the elevator down.

The saying that ties it together is “climb into it, dive away from it.”

How Do I Position Controls for a Headwind?

Say the wind is coming from your left front. You turn the wheel to the left, into the wind. That raises the aileron on the left wing - the upwind side - so the raised surface sits up into the oncoming wind and the wind pushes down on it, pinning that upwind wing to the ground.

Keep the elevator neutral or slightly aft. A headwind over the tail is already pushing the tail down and holding the nose light, which is exactly what you want. This is the “climb into it” half: aileron up on the windward side, riding the wind up.

How Do I Position Controls for a Tailwind?

A quartering tailwind is the dangerous one, and it is the one pilots forget. Say the wind is coming from your left rear. Now you turn the wheel to the right - away from the wind - and push forward.

A tailwind wants to sneak under the tail surfaces and under the raised trailing edge of a wing and lift the back of the airplane. Think of it as a hand trying to slip under the airplane from behind; your job is to give it no lip to grab.

Pushing the elevator down points its trailing edge into the airflow so the wind pushes the tail down instead of up. Turning away from the wind lowers the aileron on the upwind side, tucking it out of the wind’s reach so a gust can’t get under it and flip that wing up. This is “dive away from it.”

A Simple Trick to Remember Which Way to Move the Yoke

Imagine the wind is a hill, and your yoke is the steering wheel of a little car.

  • Wind in front: You are driving up the hill. Pull back, aileron up on the windward side - climb into it.
  • Wind behind: You are driving down the hill. Push forward - dive away from it.

For which way to turn the wheel: steer toward the wind when it’s ahead, away from the wind when it’s behind. Into it up front, away from it out back. Some pilots point a thumb where the wind is coming from and let it guide the wheel. Use whatever picture sticks, and use it every taxi until your hands do it without asking your head.

How Do I Find Where the Wind Is Coming From?

You can’t position for wind you can’t find, and guessing is not a plan. Use every source available:

  • ATIS or automated field weather gives you a baseline wind.
  • The windsock is truth - it shows what’s happening right now, right there. A limp sock is a non-event; a sock standing straight out means 15 knots or more and you’d better be positioned.
  • Flags, smoke, ripples on puddles, and the lay of the grass are all data.

One subtle point: the wind at the approach end of the runway and the wind back by the hangars can be completely different, because buildings, tree lines, and terrain bend the wind around. Keep updating your picture as you move.

Why Repositioning at Every Turn Matters

This is not set-and-forget. Consider a towered field with ATIS wind 270 at 18, gusting 26, and a ramp that faces south.

As you pull out heading south, that 270 (a west wind) crosses your right side and slightly from the front - a right quartering headwind. Aileron into it: yoke right, elevator neutral.

You taxi to the first turn and swing north up the parallel taxiway. Everything changes. That same west wind now crosses your left side and slightly from behind - a left quartering tailwind. Your hands have to move: yoke left, away from the wind, and push forward. Same wind, same airplane, opposite control position, because your relationship to the wind flipped when you turned.

Every time you turn on the ground in real wind, you owe the airplane a fresh look: where’s the wind now, relative to me, and do my hands need to move?

Handling Gusts on the Ground

A steady 18-knot wind is manageable and predictable. Gusts are neither. A gust to 26 means the wind is punching, not pushing - quiet for ten seconds, then a slam. That is exactly when airplanes get tipped: the moment the pilot relaxed because it felt calm.

On a gusty day, hold your control input firmly and hold it the whole time, through the quiet parts, ready for the punch. Full deflection is your friend - turn the wheel all the way to the stop in the direction you need. Half measures on a big-wind day are just a slower way to scare yourself.

Practical Steps for Your Next Windy Taxi

  1. Say it out loud. At the start of taxi, look at the sock and speak the wind and the correction: “Wind off my left front, aileron left, climbing into it.” Talking forces you to think.
  2. Taxi deliberately. Slow enough to be gentle on the controls, committed enough that you’re actually flying the airplane on the ground. You’re the pilot from the moment the wheels start rolling.
  3. Taildraggers demand more, not less. The tailwheel puts your center of gravity behind the mains, so a tailwind genuinely wants to weathervane and lift you. If you fly one, get real instruction in it.
  4. Think about it at shutdown, too. A gust lock, a good tie-down, and chocks matter on a windy day. The wind doesn’t stop being a wing-lifter just because the engine is off.

What Examiners Look For on the Checkride

The Airman Certification Standards for taxiing - the private pilot standard - specifically call out positioning the flight controls correctly for the existing wind conditions. It is a named skill.

A sharp examiner will watch your hands during taxi-out before you’ve done anything else. They will note whether the yoke moved when you turned from a headwind leg onto a tailwind leg. Most applicants set it once and forget it; the ones who reposition corner to corner as the relative wind changes are the ones who look experienced.
