Class Golf airspace is defined as any airspace not designated as Class Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, or Echo. It occupies the bottom of the national airspace system, starting at the surface in many locations and extending upward until it meets a controlled airspace designation above. At airports without towers or instrument approaches - grass strips, private fields, and rural airports - the surface itself is Class Golf.

What Is Class Golf Airspace?

The national airspace system is best understood as a vertical stack of layers. Class Alpha covers 18,000 feet MSL up to Flight Level 600. Below that, Class Echo spans the middle altitudes, covering the entire contiguous United States from 14,500 feet MSL to 18,000 feet MSL. Class Echo also appears locally, with floors at either 1,200 feet AGL or 700 feet AGL, around airports with instrument approaches.

Class Golf fills in everything beneath all of that. It is not a residual or informal designation - it is a defined FAA airspace class with specific rules attached.

The formal regulatory definition: Class Golf is airspace that has not been designated as Class Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, or Echo.

How Do You Identify Class Golf on a Sectional Chart?

Class Golf is identified by the absence of coloring, not the presence of it. This is the single most important concept to internalize when reading a sectional for uncontrolled airspace.

  • Magenta shading (fading outward from an airport) marks a Class Echo floor at 700 feet AGL
  • Blue shading or a blue veil marks a Class Echo floor at 1,200 feet AGL
  • White space with no shading and no dashed airspace rings indicates Class Golf, up to where area-wide Class Echo begins

In most of the contiguous United States, that area-wide Class Echo floor sits at 1,200 feet AGL. Below that altitude, in white space on the chart, you’re in Class Golf. Don’t assume a uniform floor - always verify against the sectional for the specific area.

What Are the Communication Requirements in Class Golf?

In Class Golf, there is no radio communication requirement. No transponder is required either. A pilot can legally depart a Class Golf airport without contacting anyone, without squawking a code, without making a single transmission.

This stands in sharp contrast to controlled airspace. Class Delta requires two-way communication established before entry. Class Bravo requires an explicit clearance. Class Golf requires neither.

Using the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency (CTAF) at non-towered airports remains best practice for traffic separation - but it is a recommendation, not a regulatory requirement. Understanding that distinction matters on the oral exam.

ATC provides no separation services in Class Golf. There are no radar services, no traffic advisories, no IFR/VFR deconfliction. The pilot is entirely responsible for see-and-avoid.

What Are the VFR Weather Minimums in Class Golf?

This is where Class Golf diverges most sharply from the rest of the airspace system - and where pilots consistently get caught.

In Class Bravo, Charlie, Delta, and Class Echo above 700 feet AGL, the standard VFR minimums are 3 statute miles flight visibility and cloud clearances of 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, and 2,000 feet horizontal.

Class Golf uses a different table:

Class Golf, below 1,200 feet AGL, daytime:

  • 1 statute mile flight visibility
  • Clear of clouds - no specific distance required

Class Golf, above 1,200 feet AGL but below 10,000 feet MSL, daytime:

  • 1 statute mile visibility
  • 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal cloud clearance

Class Golf, above 10,000 feet MSL:

  • 5 statute miles visibility
  • 1,000 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 1 statute mile horizontal cloud clearance

In controlled airspace, being within 500 feet of a cloud is a violation. In Class Golf below 1,200 feet AGL during the day, you only have to be clear of them - no minimum distance required.

How Do the VFR Minimums Change at Night in Class Golf?

The nighttime shift in Class Golf minimums is the most commonly missed item on both the written exam and the oral.

Class Golf, below 1,200 feet AGL, at night:

  • 3 statute miles flight visibility
  • 500 feet below, 1,000 feet above, 2,000 feet horizontal cloud clearance

That is identical to standard controlled airspace. The reduced daytime minimums do not carry over after dark.

The FAA’s reasoning is direct: see-and-avoid depends on visibility. During the day, one mile provides a workable visual horizon. At night, terrain, obstacles, and traffic become dramatically harder to detect. The relaxed daytime rule does not extend to night operations.

This creates a real operational trap. A pilot departs a Class Golf airport in the afternoon with 2 miles visibility and an overcast at 3,000 feet. Below 1,200 feet AGL in the daytime, that’s legal - more than one mile, and clear of clouds below 3,000 feet. The flight takes longer than planned. The pilot is still airborne at last light. At that moment, the visibility requirement increases from 1 mile to 3 miles. A legal condition just became a violation, with no change in actual weather.

The regulation defines the floor for legality, not the standard for sound judgment. One mile visibility in Class Golf is a regulatory minimum. It is not an operating recommendation.

What Happens When a Class Delta Tower Closes?

When a towered airport’s Class Delta is not staffed, the Delta goes away. What replaces it depends on the airport.

If the airport has a published instrument approach, the surface area may become a Class Echo surface area, maintaining protection for instrument operations. If the airport does not have that designation, the surface area reverts to Class Golf when the tower closes.

This matters operationally in two ways. First, communications: with the tower open, you establish two-way contact before entering Class Delta. With the tower closed and Class Golf in effect, no contact is required. Second, ATC services disappear - no radar, no separation, no advisories.

The ATIS may still be broadcasting. Automated Terminal Information Service recordings operate continuously at many airports regardless of tower staffing. The presence of an ATIS does not mean the tower is open.

Always check the Chart Supplement entry for the airport. That entry lists tower hours and specifies what the airspace class becomes when the tower is not staffed.

How to Apply This on the Oral Exam

Examiners don’t test airspace through memorized recitation. They will hand you a sectional, point to a location, and ask you to work through it - name the class, identify the altitude floor, state the applicable minimums, and evaluate a scenario.

The method that works: name the class, name the altitude, name the time of day, state the minimums. Then answer whether the operation is legal, and then whether it’s prudent. Those are two different questions with two different answers.

A practical exercise that prepares pilots well: take a local sectional and select three or four airports you fly near regularly. For each one, trace the airspace layer by layer from the surface up. Identify the class at the surface, find where it transitions, determine the VFR minimums at a typical cruise altitude. Do that exercise once with a real chart and the application becomes automatic.
