How do I read Class Echo floors on a sectional chart?

The magenta vignette (700 AGL). The 700-foot floor shows up as faded magenta shading - a soft, fuzzy ring, darker on the outside edge and fading inward, wrapped around an airport. Drift into the faded magenta ring around the little airport, and Echo now starts at 700 feet. At 800 feet you’ve climbed into controlled airspace without changing altitude. Now the Echo rule applies: 3 miles, 500 below / 1,000 above / 2,000 horizontal. You cannot physically get 500 feet below a cloud that’s only 200 feet above your head. You didn’t climb and you didn’t do anything different - you crossed an invisible line from blue to magenta and went from legal to illegal. How should I brief airspace on a cross-country?
Here’s a practical routine that takes about 90 seconds per leg.
Trace the ground under your course line. Run your finger along the magenta course line and ask what’s beneath you the whole way. Open country where Echo is up at 1,200, or a string of faded magenta rings where it drops to 700? On a nice day it changes little at cruise - you’re in Echo either way - but note it anyway, so if the weather softens and you have to get low, you already know where the floors are.
Look for the sharp lines. Faded magenta and blue vignettes are Echo floors. But watch for solid magenta circles, dashed magenta, and solid or dashed blue - those mark surface areas, Class Delta, and the busier airspace edges. A dashed magenta line is a Class Echo surface area - Echo down to the ground around an airport with instrument approaches but no operating tower. Ask where your out is. If the ceiling drops to 1,000 feet on this route, where can you go? The answer lives in the airspace colors. What does the examiner want on a non-towered arrival?
This classic scenario shows up on a lot of checkrides. You’re inbound to a small field inside a faded magenta ring. On a nice VFR day, pattern altitude puts you in Echo (floor at 700) well above the floor. No tower, so nobody clears you to do anything - you make position calls on the common frequency, fly a normal pattern, and land.
Then the examiner changes it: same airport, but now the ceiling is 800 overcast. What do you do?
They’re listening for you to recognize that at 800 feet in that magenta ring you’re in Class Echo, and you cannot meet the 500-below cloud clearance with the ceiling that low. So the honest answer is: this is no longer a VFR arrival. Either the weather is good enough to stay legal in Echo, or it isn’t - and if it isn’t, you’re not going, diverting, or (if instrument rated, current, and equipped) picking up a clearance and flying the approach. What they don’t want to hear is “I’d just sneak in underneath,” because that tells them you either don’t understand the airspace or don’t respect it.

Don’t picture airspace as letters. Picture it as a question: could there be an airplane in the clouds near me right now that I can’t see?
- High country at cruise on a clear day - the honest answer is maybe. That’s why it’s Echo and the clearances are real.
- Down low in the middle of nowhere in Class Golf - probably not. That’s why it’s loose.
