That extra resolution matters when you’re picking through complex, multi-tiered airspace.
Inside each ring on the TAC, two numbers appear stacked like a fraction. The top number is the ceiling, the bottom number is the floor, both in hundreds of feet MSL. A notation reading 30/14 means that tier of Class Bravo runs from 1,400 feet MSL up to 3,000 feet MSL. The ceiling of most Class Bravo airspace tops out at 10,000 feet MSL.

How Do You Legally Fly Underneath Class Bravo Shelves?
If you’re flying below the floor of a given tier, you are not inside Class Bravo - even if you’re within its lateral boundaries. These floors create legal routes under the shelves that VFR pilots use every day to navigate around major airports without contacting approach.
The trap is that floors change as you move inward. You might be at 2,000 feet under an outer shelf with a floor of 2,500 feet - legal. But as you move closer, an inner ring might have a floor of only 1,500 feet. Suddenly your cruise altitude of 2,000 feet puts you inside Class Bravo. You haven’t climbed. The airspace stepped down around you.

What Equipment and Certifications Are Required to Enter Class Bravo?

“Denver Approach, Cessna Seven Two Three Romeo, VFR, one five miles south, four thousand five hundred, request Class Bravo transition.”
The controller responds: “Cessna Seven Two Three Romeo, Denver Approach, squawk four four one two, altimeter two niner niner two.”
You read back the squawk, set it, and hear: “Radar contact.”
You are not cleared into the Class Bravo. The controller has identified you on their scope. Nothing more.
You hold outside the boundary and wait.
Then: “Cessna Seven Two Three Romeo, cleared into the Class Bravo, proceed direct Denver at or below four thousand five hundred, report the Broncos stadium in sight.”
Now you have your clearance. Read it back completely:
“Cleared into the Class Bravo, direct Denver, at or below four thousand five hundred, will report the stadium, Seven Two Three Romeo.”
Then fly it exactly as cleared.
What Do You Do If the Clearance Never Comes?
The rule does not change based on frequency congestion or dwindling distance to the boundary. If you have not heard the words “cleared into the Class Bravo,” you do not enter. Your options:
- Turn to remain outside the boundary
- Climb above the ceiling (most Class Bravo tops at 10,000 feet MSL)
- Descend below the floor of the approaching tier
Plan your route and fuel state so that staying out is always a viable option. A routing that leaves you no room to hold outside the boundary if ATC doesn’t clear you promptly is a routing that will eventually cause a problem.
If you are unclear on a restriction - an altitude ceiling, a reporting point, anything - ask immediately. “Denver Approach, Seven Two Three Romeo, say again altitude restriction.” Controllers expect this. A 30-second delay is always better than busting a restriction you didn’t fully catch.
What Is the Mode C Veil?
The Mode C veil is a 30 nautical mile ring centered on the Class Bravo primary airport. Inside that ring, every aircraft - even those well below any Class Bravo shelf, flying over open farmland - must have an encoding (altitude-reporting) transponder operating. The veil applies regardless of whether you’re anywhere near the actual floors and ceilings of Class Bravo.
A 250-knot airspeed limit also applies inside the Mode C veil, matching the speed limit inside Class Bravo itself. On a checkride, the examiner expects you to know both limits - inside the airspace and inside the veil. Knowing only one is an incomplete answer.
Are There VFR Transition Routes Through Class Bravo?
At some Class Bravo airports, the FAA has published VFR flyways or VFR transition routes - specific paths depicted on the TAC with blue dashed lines and altitude notations. Flying one of these routes exactly as depicted, at the depicted altitude, allows a VFR pilot to legally transit certain portions of Class Bravo without receiving an individual clearance from approach.
These routes are a published procedure, not a shortcut. They have specific altitude requirements, specific waypoints, and sometimes specific frequency monitoring requirements. Not every Class Bravo has them. Check your TAC before assuming one exists for your route.
What Happens If You Bust Class Bravo?
An airspace incursion at a Class Bravo airport is a serious event. ATC will almost certainly call you on it, likely asking you to confirm your position and squawk ident. Respond honestly.
After the flight, you may receive a call or a letter from the FAA. The NASA Aviation Safety Reporting System (ASRS) exists in part for this situation. Filing an ASRS report within 10 days of an incident can protect you from a certificate action in many cases - though it does not prevent administrative action such as a Letter of Correction.
