Class Bravo is the tiered airspace the FAA draws around the nation’s busiest airports, shaped like an upside-down wedding cake with a small base at the surface and wider shelves stacked above. To enter it legally, you need one thing: an explicit clearance in which the controller says your call sign followed by “cleared into the Class Bravo.” A squawk code, a “roger,” and radar contact are not clearances - and moving before you hear those words is the single most common way pilots bust Bravo.

What is Class Bravo airspace shaped like?

Class Bravo surrounds a handful of the country’s busiest airports - Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Angeles, and Chicago among them. Every one of these major airports sits under a Bravo.

The most important thing to understand is that Bravo is not a cylinder. It’s stacked in tiers, like a wedding cake flipped upside down so the smallest layer sits on the bottom and each layer above is wider than the one below.

Directly over the airport, the airspace usually runs from the surface all the way to the top. As you move away from the airport, the floor lifts - the Bravo might not start until 1,800 feet, then farther out the floor rises to 3,000 feet, then 5,000 feet, and so on out to the edge, which is often 30 nautical miles from the center. The top is typically around 10,000 feet.

This shape matters because you can fly under the shelves. The airspace beneath a raised floor - under the overhang of the cake - is yours to use without a clearance. Pilots do it every day, cruising at 1,500 feet beneath a shelf that doesn’t start until 2,600 feet, never touching the Bravo at all.

The danger is the pilot flying comfortably under a shelf who decides to climb for a better view or to get above some haze, and pops up through the floor without thinking. That climb is the single most common cause of a Bravo bust.

How do I read Class Bravo shelves on a sectional chart?

Class Bravo is drawn on the sectional with thick, solid blue lines. Inside each ring you’ll find a pair of numbers stacked like a fraction - one on top, one on the bottom.

  • The top number is the ceiling of that tier.
  • The bottom number is the floor of that tier.

So if you see 100 over 40, the Bravo in that ring runs from 4,000 feet on the bottom up to 10,000 feet on top. Below 4,000 feet in that ring, you’re underneath the airspace and you’re clear.

Here’s the part that trips people up the first time: the numbers are in hundreds of feet. Read them as thousands and hundreds without the extra zeros. “100” means 10,000 feet. “40” means 4,000 feet. It’s simple once it clicks and confusing the first time you stare at it.

Take a few minutes with a current chart, find your nearest Bravo, and trace the rings from the center outward. Watch the bottom number climb as you move away from the airport. Do that once and you’ll never forget the shape.

What clearance do I need to enter Class Bravo?

You need an actual clearance - not a request, not a heads-up, not a friendly radio call. And the clearance has specific words: your call sign, followed by the controller saying “cleared into the Class Bravo” (or “cleared into the Bravo”).

Until you hear the word cleared tied to the word Bravo, you are not allowed in.

Here’s the trap that catches careful pilots. You call approach and say, “Cessna 12345, ten miles south, request Bravo transition at 3,500.” The controller replies, “Cessna 12345, roger, squawk 0412, ident.”

Stop and look at what happened. The controller acknowledged you and gave you a transponder code - but they never said the word cleared. “Roger” means “I heard you.” A squawk code is not a clearance. Radar contact is not a clearance. Fly into the Bravo on nothing but a squawk and a roger, and you’ve busted it - even though you were talking to the right people the whole time.

Make this a hard personal rule: do not cross the solid blue line until you’ve heard your call sign and the words “cleared into the Class Bravo,” out loud, from the controller. If you’re approaching the line and haven’t heard it, turn. Stay out. Ask again if you have to.

What do I need to legally fly in Class Bravo?

Bravo has both a rating requirement and an equipment list, and the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) expect you to know them cold.

The rating. To operate in Class Bravo - or to take off or land at the primary Bravo airport - you generally need at least a private pilot certificate. There’s a well-known exception: student, sport, and recreational pilots can operate at certain Bravo airports with a specific logbook endorsement from an instructor for that airspace. At a handful of the very busiest Bravos, student solo operations are not permitted at all. If you’re a student, know that the endorsement is airport-specific - know which one you hold.

The equipment. Your airplane needs:

  • A transponder with altitude reporting (Mode C)
  • ADS-B Out (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast), which broadcasts your position and altitude to the network
  • A working two-way radio - because the whole thing depends on hearing those three words

That equipment is required inside the Bravo, in the airspace above the Bravo up to 10,000 feet, and generally within 30 nautical miles of the primary airport from the surface up. That 30-mile ring is the Mode C veil - the invisible bubble where your equipment must be working and reporting even when you’re under the shelves and technically outside the Bravo. Being under the cake keeps you out of the Bravo; it does not get you out of the veil.

Should I fly under Class Bravo or request a transition through it?

When your cross-country brushes a major metro area under a Bravo, you have two honest choices - and a good pilot decides between them on the ground, not at 150 knots with the city filling the windscreen.

Choice one: go under it. Find the shelves on the chart, pick an altitude comfortably below the floor, and fly beneath the overhang - say, 2,000 feet under a shelf that starts at 4,000. You never talk to anyone, never need a clearance, and never touch the Bravo. It’s completely legitimate.

But be honest about the trade-off. Under a shelf you’re compressed - every other light airplane avoiding the Bravo is squeezed into that same thin layer between the ground and the floor. It gets busy. Keep your eyes outside, keep your speed reasonable, and stay level. The impulse to climb is the whole risk. Under the shelf means level under the shelf.

Choice two: go through it. Call approach control well before you arrive, request a Bravo transition, and if the controllers have room they’ll clear you in, watch you the whole way, and keep the airliners separated from you. It’s one of the great free services in aviation - a level of attention and separation many pilots never use because the radio makes them nervous.

If the controller is too busy, they’ll say “unable.” That’s not a rejection of you as a pilot; it just means the airspace is full. You say roger, stay out, and go to plan one - under the shelf.

And if they say unable while you’re approaching the blue line? You turn. No clearance, no entry. You are never committed to entering controlled airspace you haven’t been cleared into. The out is always a turn, and it’s always available.

What are the speed and weather rules for Class Bravo?

Speed. Beneath the lateral limits of Class Bravo - and in any VFR corridor through it - you may not exceed 200 knots indicated airspeed. Most training airplanes will never see that number, but the examiner expects you to know it, and it becomes very real in faster aircraft. Under the shelves, 200 knots is your ceiling.

Weather. This is where Bravo is the exception, and where pilots mix it up. In most controlled airspace below 10,000 feet, VFR requires 3 statute miles visibility plus staying 500 feet below, 1,000 above, and 2,000 horizontally from clouds. In Class Bravo, the requirement is simply 3 statute miles visibility and clear of clouds - not the 500-below/1,000-above spacing.

Why the difference? Inside the Bravo, ATC is separating everybody. The controller is the safety net, so the cloud-clearance rule relaxes to clear of clouds - just enough to see and be seen.

The Class Bravo mental checklist

Run this the next time your route brushes a Bravo:

  1. Look at the chart before you fly and find the shelves. Know the floor of every ring on your route.
  2. Decide your plan on the ground - under it or through it. Don’t improvise that decision in the air.
  3. If you’re going under, stay level and respect the 200-knot limit. Don’t climb without checking the chart.
  4. If you’re going through, call early, be brief, and wait for the words - “cleared into the Class Bravo.” Nothing less gets you in.
  5. No clearance, no entry. The out is always a turn, right up until you cross the solid blue line.

Do those five things and Class Bravo stops being the scary part of the chart. It becomes what it actually is: a tool, a service, and some of the best radar coverage and separation you’ll ever get - free for the asking, if you’ll just say hello and wait for three little words.
