Simply talking to the controller, hearing your call sign read back, or being told “radar contact” is not a clearance. The airspace is shaped like an upside-down wedding cake, with shelves that stack higher and wider as they move away from the primary airport, and the boundaries are invisible - which is exactly why understanding the numbers on your sectional matters.

What Does Class Bravo Airspace Look Like?

Class Bravo is built like a stack of rings, which is where the “upside-down wedding cake” nickname comes from. Directly over the primary airport sits the smallest ring, the inner core, which usually extends from the surface up to 10,000 feet.

As you move outward from the airport, the airspace stacks into shelves. Each shelf starts higher off the ground than the one inside it, but they all typically top out at the same altitude - usually 10,000 feet above the airport.

The result: the closer you are to the center, the more of the vertical column belongs to Bravo. The farther out you fly, the more room you have to slip underneath a shelf without ever entering the airspace. Because the layers get wider as they climb, the cake is effectively upside down.

Why Is Class Bravo So Easy to Bust?

The boundaries are invisible. You can’t see a shelf, and the airspace changes based on your altitude and your position at the same time. You might be perfectly legal at one moment, climb just a few hundred feet, and be inside Bravo without ever changing your heading.

Here’s the classic scenario that catches pilots every year. Suppose the shelf above you has a floor of 3,000 feet. You’re cruising along at 2,600 feet, completely legal, and nobody needs to talk to you.

Then you get distracted - looking for traffic, heads-down with the iPad, or instinctively climbing to avoid rising terrain - and you drift up to 3,100 feet. You are now inside Class Bravo without a clearance, and you never felt a thing. Bravo doesn’t announce itself. There’s no fence, no gate, no bump - just a line on a chart and a number you were supposed to remember.

How Do I Read Class Bravo Numbers on a Sectional?

On the sectional chart, Class Bravo is drawn with thick, solid blue lines. Inside each section of the cake you’ll see a set of numbers that looks like a fraction - a number on top and a number on the bottom.

The top number is the ceiling, and the bottom number is the floor, both expressed in hundreds of feet above sea level. So a marking of 100 over 30 means that section of Bravo runs from 3,000 feet up to 10,000 feet MSL.

That MSL detail trips up students. These are mean sea level altitudes - the number your altimeter actually reads - not height above the ground. A floor of 3,000 means 3,000 on your altimeter, not 3,000 above your wheels. Set your altimeter, know your field elevation, and read the chart carefully.

When the bottom number is the letters SFC, that means surface - that’s the core, with Bravo extending all the way to the ground.

What Clearance Do I Need to Enter Class Bravo?

You need an actual clearance, and the distinction is where pilots get into real trouble. Under FAR 91.130, you must receive an ATC clearance from the controlling facility before you enter Class Bravo.

The phrase that matters is “cleared into the Bravo” (or “cleared into the Class Bravo”). You have to hear those specific words.

Here’s why this is such a common violation. You call up and say, “Approach, Cessna 12345, ten miles south, 2,500, request transition through the Bravo,” and the controller replies, “Cessna 12345, standby.”

Standby is not a clearance. “Radar contact” is not a clearance. Hearing your call sign read back is not a clearance. If you hear anything other than “cleared into the Bravo,” you must stay out - hold outside the blue line or remain below the shelf until you hear those words. Every year, pilots get violated because the controller said their tail number and they assumed that meant they were cleared in. It doesn’t.

How Is Class Bravo Different From Class Charlie?

The contrast makes the rule crystal clear. In Class Charlie, all you need is two-way radio communication established - if the controller says your call sign, you’re in communication and you can enter.

Class Bravo is stricter. Bravo demands the actual clearance. That single difference is the most important thing to lock into memory.

How Do I Transition Class Bravo Correctly?

Work the transition in order, start to finish:

  1. Plan before you key the mic. Look at the chart and figure out where you are relative to the shelves, and what altitude keeps you clear until you get your clearance. Have a plan for what you’ll do if they say no.
  2. Find the right frequency. It’ll be an approach or departure control frequency, available on the chart, in the Chart Supplement, or on the ATIS.
  3. Get the ATIS first - always. Call up already knowing the current information, active runways, and altimeter setting. It marks you as a professional and keeps the frequency clear.
  4. Make a complete call. Who you’re calling, who you are, where you are, your altitude, and what you want: “Approach, Skyhawk 12345, over the lake at 3,500, request clearance through the Class Bravo, northbound, destination such-and-such.”
  5. Listen and wait for the words. Once you hear “cleared into the Bravo,” you’re in the system. Follow their headings and altitudes.

The payoff is real: inside the Bravo, everybody is separated by ATC, making it some of the safest, most protected airspace you can fly - once you’re legally inside it.

What Equipment Is Required for Class Bravo?

Bravo has equipment requirements before you even think about entering. You need a Mode C transponder (altitude-reporting) and ADS-B Out (Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast), which broadcasts your position and altitude.

Here’s the part pilots forget: those requirements extend beyond the Bravo itself. They apply in the shelf of airspace above the Bravo up to 10,000 feet, and within 30 nautical miles of the primary airport from the surface up. That 30-mile ring is called the Mode C veil - your transponder and ADS-B need to be on and working anywhere inside it.

Can Student Pilots Fly Into Class Bravo?

Yes - most of them. A student, sport, or recreational pilot can fly into most Class Bravos, but it requires a specific endorsement. Your instructor must provide ground and flight training on that particular Bravo and log an endorsement in your logbook and training record.

There’s an exception. A short list of the very busiest Bravos - the major New York, Washington, and Los Angeles airports among them - prohibits student pilots from taking off or landing at the primary airport, and no endorsement will get you in. It’s not a trivia question - it’s a can-you-not-bust-this question.

The practical habit that keeps you safe: know where the floors are before you launch. Look at the shelves along your route and pick your altitude on purpose. If you’re going underneath, give yourself a cushion - fly a couple hundred feet below the shelf, not right up against it, because your altimeter has some slop and so does your attention.
