Every year, the FAA publishes a list of enforcement actions. Read through enough of them and a pattern emerges: pilots who lost certificates or faced civil penalties, many of whom had a radio, were talking to ATC, and believed they were legal. They still busted the Bravo. Understanding Class Bravo airspace - and specifically the difference between talking to a controller and being cleared by one - is one of the most consequential gaps a VFR pilot can close.

What Does Class Bravo Airspace Look Like on a Sectional?

Look at any major commercial airport on a sectional chart - Dallas-Fort Worth, Chicago O’Hare, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, Denver International - and you will see rings of solid blue lines surrounding them. Each ring represents a different shelf of airspace. Stacked together, they form the shape pilots have always called the upside-down wedding cake.

Each section of that cake has a ceiling and a floor. On the sectional, those numbers appear as a fraction: the top number is the ceiling in hundreds of feet MSL, the bottom number is the floor. A notation of 100/25 means the shelf extends from 2,500 feet MSL up to 10,000 feet MSL. The innermost ring, directly over the airport, typically runs from the surface up to 10,000 feet. Each successive ring steps the floor higher.

The exact dimensions are not standardized. Class Bravo is custom-built for each facility, designed around that airport’s specific instrument approach and departure procedures. Atlanta’s Bravo looks different from Denver’s looks different from LAX. You have to look at the chart every time. There is no safe assumption to make from memory.

What Is the Mode C Veil and Why Does It Apply Even Outside the Bravo?

The Mode C veil is a circle 30 nautical miles in radius centered on the primary airport in a Class Bravo. Inside that circle, every aircraft is required to have a transponder with altitude reporting capability - regardless of whether they are anywhere near the actual Bravo shelves.

This is a separate requirement from the Bravo clearance itself. Flying without an altitude-reporting transponder inside that 30-nautical-mile ring is its own violation, independent of whether you entered any Bravo airspace. The whole traffic picture in that terminal environment depends on ATC having accurate altitude data from every aircraft in the area.

On a sectional, the Mode C veil appears as a thin dashed blue line surrounding the entire terminal area. Find it, know where you are relative to it, and ensure your transponder is on and reporting altitude before you get anywhere near it. That is the baseline requirement before entering the Bravo even becomes a question.

What Exactly Counts as a Class Bravo Clearance?

This is where enforcement actions happen. To enter Class Bravo airspace, you need an explicit clearance - not a frequency assignment, not a squawk code, not the words “radar contact.” A controller must say “cleared into the Bravo” or “cleared through the Bravo.” Those specific words constitute authorization. Anything short of them does not.

Flight following is not a Bravo clearance. When a controller gives you traffic advisories and tracks you on radar, that is a service. It is not permission to cross the solid blue line. If you enter Class Bravo having received a squawk code and radar contact but not those specific clearance words, you are in violation. The FAA and every review of these enforcement cases are consistent on this point: the pilot is responsible for obtaining a Class Bravo clearance before entry, not before they believed they obtained one.

How Do You Request a Bravo Clearance the Right Way?

Plan the request before you need it. When your route will take you near a Class Bravo, contact the controlling facility - Center or Approach, depending on your location - well before you reach the boundary. Give the controller something to work with:

“Approach, Cessna Seven-Two-Seven Romeo Alpha, request Bravo clearance, transitioning through the northeast corner of the Bravo at four thousand five hundred.”

That is specific, professional, and actionable. If the controller can accommodate you, they will. If not, they will route you around it. If they say “standby,” you hold outside the boundary until you get a yes or a no. Silence is not permission. Creeping toward the boundary while waiting is not acceptable. If you are approaching the line and still have no clearance, turn away from it.

Controllers at busy terminal facilities often appreciate well-prepared VFR pilots who know what to request and when. What they do not appreciate is a pilot who squawks a code and assumes they have authorization to go anywhere inside the blue lines.

What Are the Speed Limits Inside and Below Class Bravo?

Two speed restrictions apply in and around Class Bravo, and both are worth knowing precisely.

Inside Class Bravo airspace, the maximum speed for all aircraft is 250 knots indicated airspeed. This is also the limit that applies everywhere below 10,000 feet MSL, so it is consistent with what you already know.

Below the floor of the Bravo - in the airspace underneath those shelves - there is an additional restriction: 200 knots maximum. That underside of the Bravo is a busy transition zone for arrivals and departures, and the lower speed limit reflects that traffic density. Know both numbers.

What Are the VFR Weather Minimums Inside Class Bravo?

Class Bravo weather minimums are simpler than most pilots expect. You need 3 statute miles of flight visibility and you must remain clear of clouds - no specific vertical or horizontal distance from clouds, just clear of them.

This differs from the 1,000 above / 500 below / 2,000 horizontal rule you apply in other airspace classes. Inside the Bravo, ATC is separating you from IFR traffic by radar. You still need to see and avoid what is immediately around you, but the structured separation managed by the facility is what handles the rest.

Can You Fly Underneath the Bravo Without a Clearance?

Yes - and many VFR pilots do it regularly. You can fly beneath the shelves of the Bravo without a clearance and without talking to anyone, as long as you remain below the floor of whichever shelf you are flying under. A floor of 3,000 feet means you are legal at 2,800 feet and in violation at 3,050 feet.

The complication is that the floors are not constant. They step down as you move closer to the airport and step up as you move outward. If your route takes you inward toward the airport, a floor that was at 3,000 feet may drop to 2,500 feet and you can find yourself inside the airspace before recognizing it. This is why thorough chart review before flight matters more than a glance at the sectional in cruise.

Trace your entire planned route on the sectional before you get in the airplane. Note every shelf boundary, every floor change, every ceiling. If your cruise altitude puts you inside any shelf at any point along the route, that is a Bravo entry that requires a clearance. Discover that at the planning table, not in the cockpit.

What Are VFR Transition Routes and When Can You Use Them?

Sectional charts of major terminal areas often show VFR transition routes - charted paths through or around Class Bravo designed specifically for VFR traffic. These routes include specific altitudes and reporting points.

Using a VFR transition route does not automatically clear you into the Bravo in all cases. Read the chart notes for each route. Some require ATC contact and an explicit clearance. Others use altitudes that keep you just outside the shelves entirely, requiring no clearance at all. Know which type you are using before you depart.

What Do Student Pilots Need to Know About Class Bravo Solo Operations?

Student pilots flying solo are not automatically permitted to operate at all Class Bravo airports. Under FAR 91.131, certain Class Bravo airports require a specific Bravo endorsement from a flight instructor before a student may solo there. At some airports, solo student operations are prohibited without additional authorization.

The endorsement must be specific to each airport. If your cross-country planning takes you near a major hub, verify with your instructor which airports require endorsements and whether you have them before you finalize the route. Do not assume that a solo endorsement for your home airport extends to the Class Bravo up the road.

What Does the ACS Require for Private Pilot Applicants?

The Airman Certification Standards for private pilot testing expect you to have this material solid. For Class Bravo, you must be able to:

  • Identify Class Bravo airspace on a sectional chart
  • Explain entry requirements and describe the explicit clearance language required
  • Describe equipment requirements, including Mode C transponder and the 30-nautical-mile veil
  • State the communication requirements for Bravo entry
  • Know the visibility and cloud clearance minimums (3 SM, clear of clouds)

Where students often struggle in oral exams is connecting the chart to the regulation. They can describe the wedding cake. But when an examiner says, “You are here, at this altitude, this is your route - tell me what you need to do before you cross that line,” the answer must come automatically: identify the boundary, request the clearance, wait for explicit authorization, and confirm with a proper readback.

Readbacks matter. When a controller clears you into the Bravo, read it back: “Cleared into the Bravo, Seven-Two-Seven Romeo Alpha.” That closes the loop and confirms both parties are operating on the same understanding. Missed readbacks on clearances are noticed.
