The Two Cracked Ribs and the Broomstick
Two nights before the flight, Yeager and Glennis went horseback riding in the desert near Pancho Barnes’s Happy Bottom Riding Club, the dude ranch where test pilots drank and swapped stories. Riding back in the dark, Yeager’s horse hit a closed gate, throwing him over the front. He cracked two ribs.
The stakes were obvious. If the flight surgeon learned he was injured, he’d be pulled from the flight and the mission would go to the next pilot in line. So Yeager kept it quiet, visiting a civilian doctor in the nearby town of Rosamond to get the ribs taped.
That created a real mechanical problem. Yeager climbed down a ladder into the X-1 as both aircraft passed through about 20,000 feet. Ridley passed him the broomstick, and Yeager levered the hatch shut - no one else aware of his injury.

Yeager had outrun his own sound. He reached Mach 1.06. On the ground, observers heard a sonic boom roll across the flats like thunder on a clear day - the first sonic boom in history made by a piloted aircraft. One observer feared the X-1 had exploded. Out of fuel, Yeager glided the airplane back down dead-stick and landed cleanly on the lakebed. Colleagues later said his radio report sounded like a man describing a drive to the grocery store.
Why the Flight Stayed Secret
The public didn’t find out - the flight was classified for the better part of a year. There was no parade in 1947; when the story finally leaked through a magazine, the Air Force scrambled to catch up. Yeager received a quiet handshake and orders to keep flying faster.
He remained a test pilot at Edwards for years while others became famous, flew nearly everything with wings, and kept flying into his eighties. On the 50th anniversary of the flight, he pushed a supersonic jet back through the sound barrier one more time. Chuck Yeager died in December 2020 at age 97.
Jack Ridley, the engineer behind the broomstick, is remembered by fewer people. He died young in a plane crash in 1957 - ten years after the flight - and Yeager grieved him for the rest of his long life.
