Reeve had the runway before he had anything to put on it. There was a wrecked Eaglerock biplane sitting around the territory, and - depending on which telling you believe - a couple of other tired old airframes.

Working on nothing but nerve and a reputation he hadn’t yet earned, he scraped together credit and got himself a Fairchild. He patched it, wrenched on it, and begged parts until he had an airplane running on that mudflat. Then he began flying miners and their gear up into the mountains.

The mudflat was only the parking spot. The real feat happened up high, because many of the mines sat on the glaciers themselves - on high snowfields at 4,000 to 6,000 feet, tucked into cirques where the only flat ground for fifty miles was a river of ice moving downhill about a foot a day.

A glacier looks flat and smooth from a distance. Up close it’s a nightmare of crevasses - some bridged by a thin skin of snow that will hold a rabbit but not an airplane - plus sun cups, ice ridges, and deceptive slopes.

To land on snow and ice at all, you need skis. Being flat broke, Reeve couldn’t order certified aircraft skis from a catalog - so he made his own out of scavenged stainless steel.

On the wet, mushy snow of a warm afternoon, ordinary skis would stick - the snow would grab them and he’d never build up enough speed on the downhill run to fly.

They were so slick, the story goes, that on hard ground the airplane would try to slide off on its own. Reeve had to chock it and tie it down, because those steel skis had no more grip than a bar of soap on a bathroom floor.

With that setup - a dollar and a half, a patched Fairchild, and homemade steel skis - he hauled entire mines up onto the ice: stamp mills, boilers, cables, tons of machinery, broken into loads and flown up piece by piece onto glaciers that expedition mountaineers considered a serious undertaking just to cross on foot.

What Was It Like to Fly Reeve’s Route?

There was no heater worth the name. The cold came up through the floorboards and stayed in your boots. The cockpit smelled of hot oil, gasoline, and old fabric dope, every scent sharpened by the thin, dry air.

The big radial engine hammered away out front, and you felt every cylinder through the stick, the rudder pedals, and the seat of your pants. Your ears and your backside were your instruments - you knew the sound of a happy engine and the sound of one about to quit at 8,000 feet over ice.

Out the window it was beautiful and lethal at once: peaks higher than you, ice falls tumbling between the rocks, and that flat white surface rising to meet you while you strained for a single shadow or rock to give your eye a sense of scale.

Reeve did this again and again, and mostly walked away - though not always cleanly. He piled up more than one airplane nose-down in the mud or on a mountainside.

His summary of the craft still stands as the best anyone ever offered: “You can’t be a coward and be a bush pilot, but if you’re not a coward, you’ll be a dead one.”

That line captures the whole razor’s edge. You need the nerve to go where the airplane is needed, and the sense to be scared enough to say no when the mud’s too soft, the light’s too flat, or the load’s too heavy. The pilots who lived held both ideas in their heads at once.

From Glacier Pilot to Airline Founder

Through the 1930s, Reeve was the mudflat pilot of Valdez - a one-man legend hauling miners and machinery onto ice no one else would touch. When a survey or scientific expedition needed an airplane put down on high ice, his was the name on everyone’s lips.

Then came World War II, which reached Alaska in a way most of the Lower 48 has forgotten. Japanese forces seized American ground in the Aleutian Islands, and the military needed airfields built far out along that chain, in some of the worst flying weather on the planet - including the williwaw, a wind that screams down off the mountains without warning.

The Army needed someone who could fly and land in impossible country, and they called Reeve. He flew for the military along the chain, using every ounce of his mudflat and glacier judgment to put airplanes into places on the edge of the world.

After the war, he took everything he’d learned and built an airline: Reeve Aleutian Airways. It ran scheduled service along that brutal island chain for decades. The stowaway with a buck fifty had built a company that connected a piece of America nobody else wanted to fly to.

Every pilot who has ever put a taildragger down on a gravel bar, a bush strip, or a hayfield is flying in Reeve’s shadow. The Super Cubs, Beavers, and Cessna 185s working the backcountry today - the pilots landing on ridgelines and river bars in Idaho and Alaska right now - all trace back to men who proved the airplane could go where the road never would.

Reeve had no GPS, no engine monitor, no glass panel, no terrain warning. He had his eyes, his ears, the seat of his pants, and the nerve to go - balanced against the sense to know when to turn around. That’s the whole craft, and it still is.
