He landed uphill on the snow slope, because the grade is what stopped the airplane in thin air and soft snow. Then he took off downhill, using the slope to build the speed he could never get on the flat.
There is no go-around on a glacier. Once committed to the descent, you are landing - a mountain wall waits at the top of the slope and a drop-off at the bottom. You get one look.

Reeve flew the Big Four’s entire operation up the mountain that way - tools, pipe, food, the miners themselves - and hauled load after load of gold concentrate back down. He’d land, swap cargo, point the nose downhill, and go. He flew freight no one else would touch, to places no one else could reach, for years, and mostly kept it right side up.
Not perfectly - no one could. He put airplanes into the snow, bent them, dug them out, patched them, and flew again. He cracked up more than once and walked home.
