That work meant flying an open-cockpit airplane through mountain passes with no pressurization, no meaningful oxygen, and no radar or navigation aids. He flew the route until the money ran out and the company reorganized, leaving him broke on the docks looking for the next thing.
The next thing was Alaska. He stepped off in Valdez in 1932 with just a few dollars in his pocket - Depression money, nothing money - and found a town surrounded by high-country gold mines that were desperate for one thing: supply.
The Supply Problem That Created an Airline
In the early 1930s, a mine sitting on a glacier at five or six thousand feet had only one way to move freight: pack trains. Horses, mules, and men hauled boilers, pipe, and food up switchbacks for days or weeks, then hauled ore back down.
It was slow and murderously expensive. A great deal of promising ground was never mined at all because it simply couldn’t be reached.
Reeve looked at that problem, at the mudflat, and at the mountains, and saw an airline.
How He Turned a Tidal Mudflat Into a Runway
Reeve had no airport. What he had was a mile-wide flat of gray glacial mud - firm enough to roll on when conditions were right, a nose-flipping bog when they weren’t, and completely submerged under cold salt water twice a day when the tide came in.
So he learned the tide the way most pilots learn a traffic pattern. He knew to the minute when the flat would emerge from the water and when it would go back under, and he timed his entire flying day around it: land on the mud, load on the mud, take off from the mud, and be gone before the sea returned.
He painted a sign on his hangar that summed up the man perfectly: “Slow but Sure. Reeve Airways.” He’d rather be the pilot who arrived a little late than the one they had to go looking for.
His aircraft grew from a wrecked plane he patched together into a Fairchild - a big high-wing, radial-engine workhorse built to haul freight into hard country.
How Do You Land an Airplane on a Glacier?
The mudflat was only the parking lot. The real feat was where Reeve was going: up onto moving rivers of ice, at altitude, next to gold mines, in weather that grounded the birds.
Ordinary snow skis wouldn’t work, because spring snow up high turns wet, sticky, and heavy, gluing a wooden ski to the mountain. So Reeve, being broke and clever, built his own skis and sheathed the bottoms in metal - sheet steel and stainless scavenged from whatever he could find - so the slick surface would break loose and slide. The same trick let him operate off the gummy tidal mud.
Glacier landings demanded a specific technique:
- Land uphill. With no flat spot anywhere, Reeve flew the airplane up the slope so the grade itself bled off his speed and did his braking.
- Take off downhill. When it was time to leave, he pointed down the slope and let gravity provide the takeoff run the terrain otherwise denied him, falling off the front of the mountain into flying speed.
- Commit fully. There is no go-around on a one-way glacier. Once you start down toward the ice, you are landing - so you’d better have read the slope right.
- Read the surface first. He’d drag the site, flying low to inspect it, then come around and commit.
The surface constantly lied: glare ice, then a foot of wet mush, then a crust that held a man but not an airplane, plus crevasses hidden under a skin of snow. On overcast days the light went so flat there were no shadows or texture - a whiteout that has killed skilled pilots. Reeve learned to read the ice by subtle differences in color and sheen, the way a boatman reads water for a sandbar.
He flew miners and their gear to sites like the Big Four mine, thousands of feet up onto the glacier - work that once took a pack train the better part of a week, done in a morning. He put mining districts back in business that had been written off as unreachable.
Flying in Alaska’s Worst Weather
In that country, the wind that mattered was the williwaw - cold, dense air avalanching down off the high ice and hitting the flats in violent, shifting gusts strong enough to flip a parked airplane or slam a flying one into the ground.
There was no weather service, no ATIS, no controller to ask. There was only what Reeve could see out the window, what he remembered from yesterday, and what his gut told him about the gray wall building over the ridge.
Over years, he built an entire encyclopedia of local weather in his head: which pass closed first when a front came through, where the wind curled off which peak, and when the mud would bear weight. It was knowledge that couldn’t be bought or taught - only earned one frightening trip at a time.

When World War II reached Alaska, it reached the Aleutians - the long chain of islands running toward Japan. Japanese forces landed on Attu and Kiska, American soil, and the U.S. had to fight them off in some of the worst flying weather on earth: fog that sits for weeks and wind that never quits.
Almost no one understood how to move an airplane through it. Reeve did. He flew for the military through conditions the manuals called unflyable, because he’d spent a decade teaching himself the local rules of a place that had none. The mudflat and the glacier had been his university; the Aleutians were the final exam.

Reeve didn’t retire when the war ended. In 1946, he took everything the country had taught him and founded a scheduled airline: Reeve Aleutian Airways. He teaches the thing a checkride can’t test: judgment. Know your surface. Know your out - and know when you don’t have one, and plan accordingly. Respect the tide, the wind, and the light. Fix what’s broken with your own hands when no factory part is coming.
“Slow but sure” isn’t a joke. It’s the opposite of get-there-itis - a man deciding every day that he’d rather be late than dead, and building his whole operation around that one honest choice.
