Bob Reeve was a Depression-era bush pilot who, working out of Valdez, Alaska in the 1930s, figured out how to land airplanes on glaciers to supply remote mountain gold and silver mines. His breakthrough was shoeing his skis with stainless steel so the dry, abrasive glacier snow couldn’t freeze the aircraft to the ice, combined with a landing technique that used the mountain’s own slope. He became known as “The Glacier Pilot,” and the methods he invented were later used by the pilots who landed climbers on Denali.
Who Was Bob Reeve?
Reeve was a wanderer with a reputation for flying anything. Before Alaska, he had flown the mail in South America, over the Andes, for a Pan American outfit - experience that taught him what thin air over high rock does to an engine and a wing.
He arrived in Valdez as a stowaway on a steamship with about two dollars to his name. What he found there was an opportunity nobody else wanted: the local mines needed an air freight man, and no sane pilot wanted the job.
Why Was Flying Around Valdez So Difficult?
Valdez sat at the head of a fjord, ringed by mountains that climbed straight into the clouds. Behind the town, tucked into remote valleys, were gold and silver mining claims. Getting supplies to them was the entire problem.
In summer, freight went in on the backs of horses, and horses were lost to mud, rivers, and cold. In winter, you couldn’t go at all. A load of dynamite or new drill bits might take a month to reach a mine only about 30 miles from the dock - a distance a modern light airplane covers in roughly 15 minutes.
There were no airports, no radios, and no useful weather reports. Just rock, ice, and weather that changed its mind three times before lunch.
How Did Reeve Land an Airplane on a Glacier?
Reeve saw the answer everyone else was too sensible to consider. There was nowhere flat to land in the high mountains - no meadows, no gravel bars. But there was one thing up high that was flat enough: the glaciers.
A glacier’s upper reaches, where snow packs down year after year, form long sloping fields of white. To Reeve, that was a runway - tilted uphill, hiding crevasses, and covered by snow that might be six feet of powder or a sheet of blue ice, with no way to know which until the skis touched down.
What Made the Stainless-Steel Skis So Important?
Ordinary skis of the era were built for lakes and level snow at low elevation. On a glacier, the snow is different - dry and abrasive, like sand. When the sun warmed it, the top layer would melt just enough to grab a ski and freeze the airplane solid the moment it stopped. A pilot could land, shut down to load cargo, and return to find his aircraft welded to the ice.
Reeve solved it with stainless steel, some of it reportedly scrounged from the wreck of an old airplane. He shod the bottoms of his skis with it. Stainless is slick, doesn’t rust, and - most importantly - doesn’t grab. The dry snow that froze ordinary skis down slid right off polished steel, so Reeve could load up and break loose when he was ready to go.
Land Uphill, Take Off Downhill: Reeve’s Glacier Technique
Reeve turned the glacier’s slope into his whole method.
He landed uphill, letting the rising ground kill his speed - no brakes needed, which was just as well, since brakes up there would only dig the airplane into a crevasse. To leave, he pointed the nose downhill and let gravity do the work the engine couldn’t manage in that thin, cold, high air, sliding down the ice until the wings finally lifted him into the valley.
Land going up. Leave going down.
How Did Pilots Cope With “Flat Light” on the Ice?
The glare off glacier snow could blind a pilot and erase all sense of depth. A crevasse 100 feet deep looked like a soft shadow; a slope rising toward you looked flat until you were on top of it. Pilots called it flat light, and it could fly a man gently into a mountainside that looked like open air.
Reeve learned to read the ice instead of trusting his eyes:
- He dragged a wingtip’s shadow across the snow to judge his height.
- He read the way snow drifted to understand the wind.
- He threw out spruce boughs, a dark sack, anything to give his eye a reference point to tell up from down.
The Mudflat Runway of Valdez
Valdez itself had no proper airport, so Reeve’s home field was the tidal mudflat. When the tide went out of the fjord, it left a broad flat of slick gray glacial mud.
He timed his flights to the tide - loading at low water and getting airborne before the sea returned to swallow his runway. He painted a rough line on the mud to remind himself where the firm ground was, so the airplane wouldn’t sink in and flip. Miss the window set by the moon and the ocean, and there was no runway at all - just water.
What Was Reeve’s Lasting Legacy?
Reeve was no daredevil. A daredevil dies young; Reeve was a craftsman who thought everything through, tested it, and flew right up to the edge of what was possible without going past it. He supplied mines that had never seen a shipment arrive on time - including a mine on the Brevier Glacier reachable no other way - and flew injured miners down to Valdez when the alternative was dying on the mountain.
His nickname, “The Glacier Pilot,” stuck because he essentially invented the trade. The ski designs, the uphill approach, and the techniques for judging a landing on featureless white were passed down to the pilots who would later land climbers high on Denali and pull people off the ice for decades to come.
Reeve went on to found Reeve Aleutian Airways, flying the brutal Aleutian chain toward Japan - a region of fog, wind, and sudden williwaws and some of the worst weather regularly flown anywhere on Earth. He built and ran that company for decades.
