The conventional wisdom of the day was simple: stay off the ice. High-altitude snow is soft and grabby. Glacier ice is hard, slick, and split open with crevasses deep enough to swallow an airplane whole. And no glacier is flat - the surface always tilts uphill.
Most pilots respected those hazards and kept their distance. Reeve, with two dollars and a patched-together airplane, didn’t have that luxury. He had a problem to solve, so he set about solving the ice itself.
How Did Reeve Solve the Glacier Landing Problem?
His breakthroughs came in two pieces of hard engineering and one hard-won piece of flying technique.
First, the skis. The standard wooden skis with steel edges would freeze to the surface and shred on hard ice. Reeve built skis out of stainless steel - reportedly using sheet metal salvaged from an old bar top. The stainless kept wet snow from freezing the skis down while he loaded, and the steel stood up to the ice without splintering.
Second, the mudflats. When the tide went out at Valdez, it left vast glacial mudflats - gray silt, flat as a table, slick as grease. Reeve realized he could take off on skis right off that mud, and the incoming tide refreshed the surface twice a day. He timed his flights to the tide tables, using the ocean itself as his ramp.

How Do You Actually Land on a Glacier?
Landing on a glacier is less a landing than a controlled arrival at a place actively trying to kill you. The core enemy is depth perception. Coming down onto an uphill field of white with no trees or rocks, a pilot’s eye has nothing to grab. On a flat gray overcast day, the horizon and the surface both vanish - a whiteout - and pilots have flown straight into the ice, either flaring far too high or never seeing the slope rise to meet them.
Reeve’s answers were direct and practical:
- Read the ice for texture. Hunt for a rock, a shadow, or a wind streak - anything that gives the surface definition.
- Land uphill. The grade slows the airplane fast, with no brakes required. This is the trick that makes glacier flying possible.
- Take off downhill. Let gravity supply the speed that the thin mountain air won’t.
- Commit to the approach. There is no going around on a glacier. Once you’re low, slow, and pointed up the ice, you are landing - one way or another.
He was doing all of this at altitude. Some strips sat 5,000, 6,000, and 7,000 feet up, where the thin air meant the wings barely wanted to fly and the engine barely wanted to pull. He set down on the Brevier Glacier and on high ice fields, hauling mining machinery, men, and supplies to places that had never seen anything but a mule. For a stretch, Reeve was the only supply line those high mines had.
How Did He Become “the Glacier Pilot”?
In 1937, a scientific expedition needed to reach the high ice of the Mount Fairweather country near the Canadian border to survey the mountains. They needed a pilot who could put an airplane down on a glacier at altitude and get it off again - and exactly one man on earth had that resume.
Reeve flew the expedition onto the ice at around 8,500 feet, made landings no one else could have made, and brought everyone home. That’s when newspapers began calling him “the Glacier Pilot,” a name that stuck for the rest of his life.
What Was Reeve’s Legacy?
Reeve wrote the manual on glacier flying by going out and doing it, then coming home alive, over and over, until the doing became knowledge. That knowledge outlived him. Every ski pilot who lands on an Alaska glacier today - landing uphill, taking off downhill, committing to the approach because there is no go-around - is flying techniques Reeve worked out the hard way over Valdez.
He didn’t stay broke, either. The two-dollar stowaway went on to build Reeve Aleutian Airways, flying the Aleutian chain through some of the worst weather anywhere, supplying the military out on those islands during the war, and carrying the airline into the jet age.
