Racing the Tide

The tidal flat operation demanded its own discipline. Reeve would preflight and load cargo while mud was still draining from the sand. He’d take off, run his glacier mission into the mountains, and return with time calculated to the margin.

If he was late, he landed on whatever dry sand remained and got the airplane above the tide line before the inlet reclaimed his strip. Valdez residents described watching him roll out of a landing while water was already lapping at the far end of the flats, taxiing hard to beat the tide.
