AIRMETs are weather advisories that warn light-aircraft pilots about hazardous - but not severe - conditions along a route. There are three types: Sierra covers widespread IFR conditions and mountain obscuration, Tango covers turbulence and strong surface winds, and Zulu covers airframe icing and freezing levels. Reading all three before every flight lets you make go/no-go decisions on the ground instead of discovering the hazard in the air.

What Is an AIRMET?

The term is short for Airman’s Meteorological Information. The FAA and the National Weather Service now formally call these G-AIRMETs - the “G” stands for graphical - but in everyday flying, pilots still just say “AIRMET.”

An AIRMET is a warning about weather that is genuinely hazardous, but not severe. It sits in the middle tier of weather information. At the bottom you have ordinary weather in the METAR and forecast. At the top you have SIGMETs (Significant Meteorological Information), which cover the serious stuff: severe turbulence, severe icing, volcanic ash, and widespread dust storms - weather that can hurt a jet.

AIRMETs live in between. They describe conditions that are hazardous to light aircraft: the single-engine trainer and the piston twin. A heavy might shrug off what’s in an AIRMET, but it can ruin your day in a Cessna 172 or a Piper Cherokee.

That’s the key point: AIRMETs are written for the small airplane. When one is out over your route, it is speaking directly to the aircraft you’re about to fly.

What Do AIRMET Sierra, Tango, and Zulu Mean?

Each of the three AIRMETs covers a different family of hazard.

Sierra: IFR Conditions and Mountain Obscuration

AIRMET Sierra warns of widespread areas where ceilings are below 1,000 feet or visibility is below 3 miles - IFR conditions spread across a large area. It also covers mountains obscured by clouds, fog, mist, smoke, or precipitation.

Sierra matters even if you’re a VFR pilot who never intends to touch a cloud. It’s your low-ceiling and low-visibility early warning system. The critical word is widespread: if Sierra is painted across your route, you can’t just divert to the next field 20 miles away and expect blue sky. The whole region is soupy.

Mountain obscuration deserves special attention. If you fly out West, through the Appalachians, or anywhere the terrain rises, a Sierra for mountain obscuration means the passes and ridges are hidden - and a hidden ridge is a ridge you can fly into. Pilots have flown into terrain they couldn’t see because they pressed on into an area Sierra had already flagged.

Tango: Turbulence and Strong Surface Winds

AIRMET Tango warns of moderate turbulence, sustained surface winds greater than 30 knots, or low-level wind shear.

Moderate turbulence in a widebody is a spilled coffee. In a light trainer, it’s a genuine handful - fighting to hold altitude, tossing your passengers around, turning a routine cross-country into an exhausting slog. And turbulence doesn’t just make you uncomfortable; it makes you a worse pilot for the duration. You get tired, task-saturated, and start making small mistakes. Tango is a fatigue-and-workload advisory, not just a comfort one.

The surface-wind piece matters especially for newer pilots. Sustained winds over 30 knots change everything on the ground: the crosswind component on landing, and the risk that a gust can lift a wing while taxiing. Tango is telling you to know your airplane’s demonstrated crosswind number cold - and to be honest about whether your personal limits are anywhere near it.

Zulu: Icing and Freezing Levels

AIRMET Zulu warns of moderate airframe icing and gives you the freezing level - the altitude where the temperature crosses 0°C.

For most of us flying piston airplanes with no ice protection, this one is simple and serious. Structural ice on an aircraft not certified to handle it is one of the fastest ways to turn a flying machine into a not-flying machine. Ice adds weight, wrecks the shape of your wing and destroys lift, can freeze up your control surfaces, and accumulates faster than you’d believe.

The freezing level information is pure gold for planning, because ice needs two ingredients: visible moisture (clouds or precipitation) and a temperature at or below freezing. If you know the freezing level is at, say, 8,000 feet, and you know the cloud bases and tops, you can picture where the danger actually lives. Maybe you plan to stay below the freezing level - or realize that climbing on top would mean going straight through the ice-making layer, and today that’s a no-go.

How Do I Remember Which AIRMET Is Which?

Here’s a memory trick to keep them straight:

  • Sierra → S → Sight. It’s about what you can and can’t see (IFR and hidden mountains).
  • Tango → T → Tossed around. It’s the bumps and the wind.
  • Zulu → Z → Zero degrees. It’s the freezing level and the ice.

Sight, tossed, zero. Whatever helps you remember, use it.

How Do AIRMETs Change a Go/No-Go Decision?

Picture a Saturday morning. You’ve got a 200-mile VFR cross-country planned in your Cessna. The METAR at your departure field looks great - few clouds, good visibility. The temptation is to close the laptop and go.

But you scroll to the AIRMETs. You find an AIRMET Sierra covering the middle third of your route and an AIRMET Zulu with a freezing level around 6,000 feet.

That picture just changed completely. The Sierra tells you the middle of your trip - the part you can’t see from your window right now - is IFR or close to it, and widespread. The Zulu tells you that if clouds are stacking up in the cool air, ice is waiting in them, starting not far above your planned cruise altitude.

Now you’re a decision-maker instead of a passenger. You ask better questions:

  • Is the Sierra forecast to lift by the time I’d get there?
  • What are the TAFs along the middle leg actually saying?
  • Can I route around the Sierra, or should I wait a few hours?
  • For the ice, can I comfortably stay below 6,000 feet the whole way - and does the terrain allow it?

Maybe you go later, after the Sierra is forecast to scatter. Maybe you pick a route that keeps you in clear air. Maybe today is a good day for a one-hour local flight and a hundred-dollar hamburger instead. All of those are legitimate, professional outcomes. Reading those two AIRMETs is what let you make the call on the ground, with coffee in hand, instead of in the air with ice on the wing.

How Should I Actually Use AIRMETs?

A few practical points so you use them well:

AIRMETs are forecasts, not observations. They describe conditions occurring or expected over a period - typically issued to cover a six-hour window with an outlook beyond that. An AIRMET is not a guarantee you’ll hit the hazard at any single point, and just as importantly, the absence of an AIRMET is not a promise of smooth air. The advisory is a tool, not a force field.

They cover big areas. A single AIRMET can blanket several states, so don’t panic just because one touches your route. The skill is drilling down - use the AIRMET to know a hazard exists in the region, then use METARs, TAFs, PIREPs, and graphical products to find where inside that area the hazard is really biting.

PIREPs are your reality check. A pilot report tells you what the air is actually doing right now to real airplanes. When a Tango is out for moderate turbulence, check the PIREPs along your route: are pilots reporting moderate chop, or is it all smooth and light? The AIRMET tells you what’s forecast; the PIREP tells you what’s happening. Use them together - and file your own PIREP when you experience the conditions, so you become the eyes for the pilot behind you.

Why Do AIRMETs Matter on My Checkride?

The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) expect you to obtain and interpret weather information - not just collect it. During the oral portion of your practical test, AIRMETs are exactly what the examiner wants to hear you discuss.

They’re looking for a pilot who can say out loud: here’s the Sierra and what it means for my ceilings, here’s the Tango and what it means for my ride and crosswind, here’s the Zulu and here’s my freezing level - therefore here is my plan and my go/no-go decision.

That’s aeronautical decision-making made visible. The examiner isn’t trying to catch you flying into bad weather; they’re finding out whether you can recognize it and make a mature call. Showing you read and understood each AIRMET, and had a plan for each, is worth more than a perfectly memorized cloud-clearance number.

Build the Habit: Three Questions, Every Briefing

Every time you pull a weather briefing - before you get seduced by the pretty METAR at your home field - find the AIRMETs first and ask three questions:

  1. Is there a Sierra, and what does it mean for what I’ll be able to see?
  2. Is there a Tango, and what does it mean for my ride and my landing?
  3. Is there a Zulu, and where is the freezing level?

Three questions, every time, until it’s automatic. Sight, tossed, zero. Do that, and you’ll catch things that used to slide right past you, make more decisions on the ground, and be measurably safer for it.
