AIRMET Sierra, Tango, and Zulu, the Three Weather Advisories Hiding in Plain Sight in Your Briefing, and How to Read Them Before They Read You

AIRMETs and SIGMETs are the weather advisories that tell you, in plain terms, what conditions are likely to bite a small airplane and where. AIRMETs (Airmen’s Meteorological Information) flag widespread but non-catastrophic hazards aimed especially at light aircraft, and come in three types: Sierra (IFR and mountain obscuration), Tango (turbulence), and Zulu (icing). SIGMETs (Significant Meteorological Information) are a step up: severe weather hazardous to all aircraft. Reading these first, not last, is one of the highest-value habits in preflight planning.

What Is the Difference Between an AIRMET and a SIGMET?

An AIRMET is the National Weather Service telling you that across a large region, conditions are bad enough that a lot of airplanes, especially light ones, will have a rough time. AIRMETs cover large areas, are issued every six hours, and are amended as needed.

A SIGMET is not a tap on the shoulder. It’s a warning. SIGMETs describe weather that is hazardous to all aircraft, from your trainer up to the heavy iron cruising at flight level 390. When you see a SIGMET, the atmosphere is doing something serious.

The mental model is simple: AIRMET means widespread and significant, aimed especially at light aircraft. SIGMET means severe, aimed at everybody.

What Does AIRMET Sierra Mean?

Sierra is the IFR and mountain obscuration advisory. When Sierra is active, it means widespread ceilings below 1,000 feet, visibility below 3 miles, or mountains wrapped in cloud that you will not see coming.

Sierra matters even if you’re a VFR pilot, and especially if you’re a VFR pilot. It draws a box around the part of the country currently below VFR minimums. If your route crosses an active Sierra, that’s a flashing sign that the marginal VFR trap is set and waiting.

The mountain obscuration piece is the one that quietly kills people. You can have perfectly legal VFR conditions in the valley, three miles and clear, while the ridge you need to cross is completely socked in. Sierra is trying to tell you that.

What Does AIRMET Tango Mean?

Tango is turbulence. It also covers sustained surface winds over 30 knots and low-level wind shear. When the air feels like it’s going to be sporty, check for Tango. It will tell you where the moderate turbulence is and between which altitudes.

Here’s the part worth internalizing: moderate turbulence in a jet is a spilled coffee. Moderate turbulence in a Cessna 172, with a low-time pilot and a nervous passenger, can be the difference between a nice cross-country and a passenger who never flies with you again.

The forecast doesn’t know how big your airplane is. When you read a Tango, translate it. “Moderate” for the forecast can mean a whole lot more for you.

What Does AIRMET Zulu Mean?

Zulu is ice, specifically moderate airframe icing, and it also gives you freezing levels. If you fly anything without known ice protection, and that’s almost all of general aviation, Zulu is the advisory that should stop you cold.

Structural icing needs two things at the same time: visible moisture (cloud, rain, drizzle) and a temperature at or below freezing. Zulu tells you where those two overlap and gives you the freezing level so you know the altitudes involved.

The practical piece is about the freezing level versus where the clouds are. If the freezing level is at 9,000 feet and the cloud tops are at 7,000 feet, a cruise altitude down low in warm air might keep you clear of the whole problem. But if you’ll be climbing through cloud with the temperature already below freezing, you’re flying into the exact recipe Zulu just warned you about, in an airplane with no way to shed the ice.

Ice changes the shape of your wing and adds weight, and it does both faster than you expect. The airplane doesn’t quit all at once. It gets heavier, hungrier, and quieter until it can’t hold altitude. Zulu is the advisory that keeps that day from ever starting.

A simple memory hook: Sierra sees, Tango tosses, Zulu freezes.

What Is a Graphical AIRMET (G-AIRMET)?

The G-AIRMET is the modern picture version of the same three hazards. Instead of one text advisory valid for a full six-hour block, the graphical product gives you snapshots every three hours out to twelve hours, painted on a map with a time slider.

It’s the same information as Sierra, Tango, and Zulu, just far easier to read, and it shows you how the hazard is expected to move. If your briefing tool offers it, use it.

Why Should I Treat the Forecast as a Movie, Not a Snapshot?

Many newer pilots look at weather like a photograph of right now. But an AIRMET has a valid time, and the weather inside it is moving.

The question isn’t only whether there’s a Zulu over your departure airport right now. It’s where that Zulu will be in two hours when you’re actually up there. Reading the movement is the whole skill.

What Are the Two Types of SIGMET?

The regular (non-convective) SIGMET is issued for severe weather that isn’t a thunderstorm: severe or extreme turbulence, severe icing, and widespread dust storms, sandstorms, or volcanic ash dropping visibility below 3 miles. Severe turbulence means the airplane is momentarily out of control. Severe icing means accumulation faster than anything short of full ice protection can handle. For most of us, this isn’t weather to plan around, it’s a reason not to go.

The Convective SIGMET is about thunderstorms. It’s issued for a line of thunderstorms, an area of thunderstorms, embedded thunderstorms buried in other cloud, and severe thunderstorms. By definition, every Convective SIGMET implies severe or greater turbulence, severe icing, and low-level wind shear, whether or not it spells them out.

Convective SIGMETs are issued for the lower 48 states, hourly at 55 minutes past the hour, with special issuances in between whenever the situation demands. When you start seeing off-schedule specials pop up, the atmosphere is telling you it’s an ugly day.

How Do I Put This Together on a Real Flight?

Picture a summer afternoon. You’re planning a cross-country, a few hours out and back, in a normally aspirated single. Departure looks gorgeous: clear skies, light wind. Your instinct says go.

But in the section your eyes want to skip, there’s an AIRMET Tango for turbulence over the ridgeline halfway along your route, and a Convective SIGMET for a developing area of thunderstorms about 80 miles past your destination, moving northeast at 25 knots.

The airport is clear right now. But that Convective SIGMET is a live, moving thing, and afternoon thunderstorms build, spread, and move faster than you think when you’re doing the math on the ground. By the time you’d be turning around to come home, those storms could be sitting right where you need to be. The turbulence AIRMET over the ridge is the appetizer, telling you the air is already unstable enough to bounce you around before the storms arrive.

The briefing never says no. It lays out the pieces, and it’s on you to see that the movie ends with you boxed in.

How Do I Work Advisories Into My Briefing Routine?

Go hunting for the advisories first, not last. Ask three questions in order:

  1. Is there a SIGMET anywhere near my route or my time? If yes, you need a very good reason to keep planning.
  2. Which AIRMETs touch my route, Sierra, Tango, or Zulu, and at what altitudes?
  3. Only then, dig into the raw reports and forecasts to fill in the detail.

Use the advisories as your triage. They’re the National Weather Service pre-chewing thousands of data points down to “here’s what’s going to bite a small airplane today, and roughly where and when.” That’s an enormous gift.

This is also a checkride expectation. The FAA Airman Certification Standards for both the private and instrument ratings require you to obtain and correctly interpret weather products, and they specifically list AIRMETs and SIGMETs. Examiners want a pilot who can find the Zulu in a real briefing, read the freezing level, and explain what it means for the flight in front of them. When you’re handed a weather packet, be the applicant who goes to the advisories first.
