AIRMET Sierra, Tango, and Zulu are the three types of Airman’s Meteorological Information advisories, and each warns about a completely different hazard. Sierra covers IFR conditions and mountain obscuration, Tango covers turbulence and strong winds, and Zulu covers icing and freezing levels. Learn the three questions they answer - Can I see? Can I hold the airplane? Will I pick up ice? - and the shaded map in your briefing stops being alphabet soup.

What Is an AIRMET?

AIRMET stands for Airman’s Meteorological Information. It is a weather advisory issued by the Aviation Weather Center, part of the National Weather Service, and it is aimed squarely at general aviation - not the airlines, but the person flying a Cessna 172, a Piper Cherokee, or a Cirrus on a Saturday morning.

An AIRMET describes weather that is potentially hazardous to aircraft, but at intensities lower than what triggers a SIGMET. A SIGMET - Significant Meteorological Information - is the big brother, reserved for the serious stuff: severe turbulence, severe icing, volcanic ash, and widespread dust storms.

Think of it as a ladder. The AIRMET sits on the lower rung, describing weather that matters most to light aircraft. The SIGMET sits on the higher rung, describing threats to everybody, including the heavy jets. This article stays on the lower rung, because that is where most of us fly.

There are exactly three types of AIRMET, given phonetic letter names so nobody confuses them over a scratchy radio: Sierra, Tango, and Zulu. Each letter covers a different hazard. They are not interchangeable.

What Does AIRMET Sierra Warn About?

AIRMET Sierra covers two things: IFR conditions and mountain obscuration.

In the AIRMET sense, IFR conditions means widespread areas where the ceiling is less than 1,000 feet, the visibility is less than 3 miles, or both, over a large area. This is not one small valley with fog - Sierra is issued when that low ceiling or low visibility covers a big chunk of real estate.

Mountain obscuration is the second half of Sierra, and it gets pilots into trouble more than they like to admit. It means the ridges and high terrain are hidden by clouds, fog, precipitation, or haze. The terrain is still there. You just can’t see it.

Here is the key trap: mountain obscuration is not the same as low ceilings down in the valley. You can have clear skies at a flatland departure airport and a Sierra advisory over the ridgeline you have to cross. The valley says go. The mountain says the pass is stuffed with cloud, and you will not see the rock until you are wearing it.

Real scenario: You plan a VFR cross-country from the plains up into higher terrain. Your departure field is clear and a million, but your briefing paints an AIRMET Sierra across the mountains on your route. Even though departure looks perfect, the passes and ridges you need to cross may be obscured - and flying VFR into that is how pilots hit terrain they never saw coming.

When you see Sierra, ask yourself one question: Can I actually see where I’m going, the whole way?

What Does AIRMET Tango Warn About?

AIRMET Tango covers moderate turbulence, sustained surface winds greater than 30 knots, and non-convective low-level wind shear. There are three separate hazards living inside that one letter.

First, moderate turbulence. That is ride quality - enough to move unsecured objects and make you work to hold altitude. It won’t break the airplane, but it may convince a queasy passenger that flying isn’t for them, and on a checkride it can knock you outside your altitude and heading tolerances if you aren’t ready.

Second, sustained surface winds greater than 30 knots. That is a lot of wind for a light airplane: crosswind-component territory, a challenging taxi, and takeoffs and landings that will test your skills. Tango tells you before you leave the house that wind will be a factor.

Third - the sneaky one - non-convective low-level wind shear. This is a rapid change in wind speed or direction close to the ground that is not coming from a thunderstorm. It comes from things like a temperature inversion, wind flowing over terrain, or a frontal boundary. It matters because low-level wind shear on final approach can take airspeed away from you at the exact moment you have the least altitude to spare - turning a normal landing into a hard one, or worse.

When you see Tango, ask: Is it going to be a fight to hold the airplane where I want it - on the way there, and especially on the way down?

What Does AIRMET Zulu Warn About?

AIRMET Zulu covers two related things: moderate icing and freezing levels.

For pilots flying airplanes with no anti-ice or de-ice equipment, icing is the hazard that quietly ends the flight before it starts. Moderate icing means ice accumulates on the airframe fast enough to become a real problem over time, and even a short encounter may require action. Ice changes the shape of your wing, adds weight, kills lift, and adds drag - all at once. In an airplane not certified for known icing, the correct response to entering ice is to get out of it immediately by climbing, descending, or turning toward warmer air.

The part even certificated pilots underuse is the freezing level information. Zulu tells you the altitude of the freezing level and the band between which icing is expected. That matters because ice needs two ingredients together: visible moisture and temperatures at or below freezing. Know where the freezing level is, and you know how low the ice can reach.

Real scenario: There is an AIRMET Zulu for icing between 8,000 and 14,000 feet, with a freezing level around 6,000 feet. Now you have a strategy - stay below 6,000, where it’s above freezing, and even in the clouds you won’t make ice. That freezing level is your escape floor, and knowing it turns Zulu from a vague warning into a usable number.

When you see Zulu, ask: Where is the freezing air, and can I plan an altitude that keeps me out of ice?

How Do I Remember Which AIRMET Is Which?

Tie the three together with one question each, in order:

  • Sierra - Can I see? Low ceilings, low visibility, hidden mountains.
  • Tango - Can I hold the airplane where I want it? Turbulence, strong surface winds, low-level wind shear.
  • Zulu - Will I pick up ice? Icing and the freezing level.

See. Hold. Ice. Sierra, Tango, Zulu. If you walk away with nothing else, walk away with those three questions, in that order.

How Do AIRMETs Show Up in a Weather Briefing?

Whether you brief through an official source like Leidos Flight Service or one of the cockpit apps most of us use, AIRMETs appear both as shaded or outlined areas on a map and as written text. On the graphical products you can usually toggle Sierra, Tango, and Zulu on and off individually.

Use that toggle. Turn on Sierra by itself and look at where the low weather is. Turn on Zulu by itself and look at where the ice is. Don’t try to read all three layers stacked on top of each other - peel them apart.

A few practical points:

  • AIRMETs are issued on a schedule, typically every 6 hours, with amendments in between as the weather changes. Each carries a valid time. An AIRMET that expires before you take off may be describing weather that is already gone; the one valid for the middle of your flight is the one to study.
  • An AIRMET is a forecast over a large area, not a guarantee that every square mile inside the shaded blob is unflyable. You can find smooth air inside a Tango area. The point is that you’ve been told the ingredients for the hazard are present. The AIRMET is the flag that tells you where to dig deeper - check actual ceilings and visibilities for a Sierra, check freezing levels and PIREPs for a Zulu.

Why Pair Every AIRMET With a PIREP?

The single best companion to any AIRMET is the pilot report, or PIREP. An AIRMET tells you ice is forecast between 8,000 and 14,000 feet. A PIREP tells you a Bonanza actually picked up light rime at 9,000 twenty minutes ago - or, just as valuable, that someone flew right through and found nothing.

Forecasts tell you what’s expected. PIREPs tell you what’s happening. Use them together. And when you encounter those conditions yourself, key the mic and file one - the next pilot behind you is reading your report the same way you read the one before.

How Will AIRMETs Be Tested on My Checkride?

On the practical test, weather is a major part of the oral, living in the Airman Certification Standards under preflight planning and preparation. The examiner will hand you a scenario or a real cross-country and ask you to interpret the weather - and this is where the average applicant and the sharp applicant separate.

The average applicant says: “There’s an AIRMET Zulu, so, icing.”

The sharp applicant says: “There’s an AIRMET Zulu for icing along my route, valid through my time of flight. Freezing level is at 6,000, icing forecast from 8,000 to 14,000. My planned cruise is 7,500 - below the forecast icing, but I’m in the clouds, so I want to confirm my temperatures. Let me check the PIREPs and the winds and temperatures aloft to pin down where that freezing level actually is, and if I can’t stay in above-freezing air, I’m not going.”

Same weather. Same AIRMET. One pilot is demonstrating aeronautical decision making; the other is reading a label. The examiner is looking for the first - not because you memorized a definition, but because you turned the advisory into a decision.

Practice Before You Need It

Weather is genuinely one of the harder parts of learning to fly, because it doesn’t sit still and it doesn’t come in tidy multiple-choice boxes. Nobody reads a briefing fluently on their first try, or their tenth. If the shaded map still looks like alphabet soup, that’s normal - it means you’re learning a real skill.

Pull a full briefing tonight, even if you’re not flying tomorrow. Toggle the three layers on one at a time and practice asking the three questions. Do it enough and the day comes when you glance at the map and the whole picture just resolves.
