About Radio Hangar

Radio Hangar is a 24/7 aviation talk radio station built by three pilots. Meet the team, the hosts, and the mission.

Radio Hangar is a 24/7 aviation talk radio station built by pilots Matt Carlson, Danny Carlson, and Alan Johnson. Voices and scripts are produced with AI under our editorial direction. We pick the topics, set the tone, and credit our sources every segment. The focus stays where it belongs: on aviation.

Matt and Danny Carlson started flying with their father at an early age and are both instrument-rated private pilots. Matt has been a rated pilot for over 30 years. Danny is leading the completion of a Velocity XL-5 project alongside Matt and their father, Robert Carlson. The brothers have attended EAA AirVenture together every year since they were born, camping with friends in Camp Scholler.

Alan Johnson is a private pilot, aviation enthusiast, and the founder and operator of Aviation Soul. The three pilots have been friends for two decades. Alan has been camping with the Carlsons at AirVenture since 2019, and Aviation Soul has a booth each year at AirVenture and Sun ‘N Fun.

Why Radio Hangar Exists

There are thousands of radio stations. A handful cover aviation. None of them offer daily, original, talk-format programming built for GA pilots.

We built Radio Hangar to fill that gap. The station exists because we wanted to listen to something that didn’t exist yet: an aviation talk station that covers the topics pilots actually care about, from checkride prep to warbird restorations to the latest avionics, all day, every day.

How It Works

Radio Hangar produces original content every day across five shows. Scripts are written by AI and audio is rendered via text-to-speech. The station streams 24/7 via AzuraCast on its own infrastructure.

Editorial direction, topic selection, accuracy review, and brand voice come from the pilot team. Every segment credits its sources. Every article links to the original reporting.

The Shows

The Hangar covers aviation history and storytelling. Warbird restorations, legendary pilots, famous flights, and the stories behind the aircraft that shaped aviation.

Cleared Direct covers aviation technology and innovation. Avionics, electric aircraft, space crossover, ADS-B, weather tech, and startup spotlights.

Traffic Pattern covers flight training. Training tips, weather briefing walkthroughs, checkride prep, regulations explained in plain English, scenario-based decision making, and the mistakes student pilots actually make. Training content is reviewed for accuracy by the pilot team.

Ramp Check covers the aviation news of the day. Headlines from AVweb, AOPA, EAA, and the FAA, with context a pilot would care about.

Crosswind features discussion segments where hosts debate aviation topics from different angles.

Aviation Soul

Radio Hangar is supported by Aviation Soul. Alan Johnson, one of the pilots behind Radio Hangar, is the founder and operator of Aviation Soul. The brand makes aviation challenge coins that mark the milestones in flight, from first solo through ATP, and has a booth at AirVenture and Sun ‘N Fun each year. The integration here is organic, not a paid placement.
